2017 GLE350
Tire issue

I bought a CPO 2017 GLE350 but the warranty ran out last year. It's still only about 24-25K miles. Tires are in great shape - but - I just noticed this sidewall breakage (passenger's front) and have inquired to Continental about replacement or partial credit. It's probably OK to drive it a bit but clearly not good...

Meanwhile I'm probably going to have to buy TWO new tires so they match and are safe. I have to say Ive been impressed with how quiet the car (tires) has been so thought I'd stick with the same tire again - unless anyone has any other recommendation.?????

OEM Tires = Continental CROSS CONTACT LX SPORT 107H - SIZE: 255/50R19

On an aside my husband also bought the same GLE350 and is going to want a full set of tires later this summer so other suggestions are welcome too! QUIET being the #1 factor in tires.

So far I like my Continental CrossContact LX25 tires, which are a newer design with a higher treadlife rating than the older original Continental CrossContact LX Sport that came on the car. The price is (or was at the time) better too.

+1 for the LX25 tires. Quieter, more comfortable, longer lasting and less expensive than the factory LX Sports.

I am fully satisfied with the second set of LX25s I have purchased. Third set of tires from new now. I disliked the LX Sports from the day I bought the car. Harsh, noisy and only achieved 40k miles. I achieved 60k miles from the LX25s.

I would not drive it like that. One good pothole, I can see more damage. Continental are really great tires. For me I been waiting over a month on my Michelins Pilot Sport All Season 4 (Back order). I only purchase Michelins Pilot Sport on my Benz's. My other vehicles had Continental Extreme Contact DWS06 Plus. I was very surprise on these tires from dry, rain and snow. I'm planning to put a set of Conti's on the wife Audi.

If other members are saying the LX25 is the way to go. I take that advice over the LX Sport.

Ditch the continentals and switch to Michelins you won’t look back. Sure, the price is higher but you get what you pay for over thousands of miles. For smoothness of ride and ease of balance, Michelin has consistently been one of if not the best quiet riding tire.
And on the Mercedes ML/GLE/GLS SUV’s, the smoothest riding tire is a must as it is easy for vibrations to be transferred on these quiet smooth riding isolated tanks.

My experience with Continental has been unremarkable. On a previous Audi (Extreme Contact DWS flat spotted in cold weather and vibrated until warmed up) and the Cross Contact UHP on my current CPO GLS which came on the truck (3 out of 4 tires out of round causing vibration). I’ve heard of people struggling to find brand new round true tires from Continental which can make balancing a pain. As a matter of fact I am getting ready to ditch these for Michelins this week.

Every set of Michelins I have installed in a vehicle have outperformed. On my wife’s ML350 with the same tire size as you, we put these on a year ago as they were highly recommended:

https://m.tirerack.com/tires/tires.j...V&autoModClar=

They have been impressive! So smooth, responsive, comfortable and quiet, the ride of the ML was transformed. The car is so much more enjoyable to drive. And these tires still don’t even show any sign of wear! Supposedly folks can get 80,000 miles out of these these things.

Another newer released option which was not available when I purchased the Defenders is these

https://m.tirerack.com/tires/tires.j...V&autoModClar=

My mechanic raved about them and I had 2 sets installed on my mom and sisters cars and yes these tires both improved the ride significantly so drastic it was almost as if they got a new suspension.

Hope for the best whatever choice you make.

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far! Due to almost zero wear I'm thinking the dealer probably put new tires on my CPO so I will just replace the one defective tire (already ordered a match) and then wait until the set wears down to replace them all.

Meanwhile my husband's car has 35K miles on the Continentals and he's going for a new set so the recommendations are appreciated! We've had Michelin Pilot on several cars and I've never been happy with the noise levels - the Defenders ($284 at Sams ) are supposed to be better so maybe that's what he will get. The 107H rating might make it a little softer/quieter tire than the 107Y rating of the CrossClimate ($278 at Sams). Price isn't a concern. QUIET is. Though a deal is always good - Sams has $70 off on a set of Michelins right now.. FWIW We are also member at Costco - but they have no rebate/deal going on Michelin right now. They have the Defender at the same price - but no CrossClimate. We prefer buy from Sams/Costco for the hazard warranty, free flat repair and lifetime rotation service which is included with installation. America's Tire (aka Discount tire) tries to charge $41.75 per tire for hazard warranty!

The $70 off from Sam’s is probably the Michelin summer rebate promotion going on right now expiring in 7 days which is redeemed through Michelin for a $70 Visa Gift Card. So even if you bought from Costco you can get the same rebate as it is provided by Michelin and not the reseller. I’ve purchased through tire track and always got the rebate. I believe all you need is your purchase receipt for the online submission.

Yes - that works too! Interesting that Sams credits it up front - checking online the rebate is valid with purchases via Costco as well. BUT - Sams is also giving $40 off on installation for Plus members - Just $40 for all 4 tires.
