Installing aftermarket side running boards with led lights

I have a 2016 Mercedes GLE and recently added aftermarket side running boards with LED lights. To integrate these lights with my vehicle's existing systems, I plan to connect the positive and negative wires to the side rear mirror puddle lights. Will this connection work, and are there any potential risks or issues associated with this approach? Ideally, I would like the LED lights to illuminate when I lock or unlock the vehicle.
