2016 GLE 350 Battery Issue

2016 GLE 350 Battery Issue

Hello, I have a 2016 GLE 350 with 68k on it New Battery was installed in 2023 then again in 4/25 once again the vehicle has gone stone cold dead, takes a jump, then is fine for awhile,
in the last 3 months it has gone dead 3x, vehicle only goes appx 6k miles a year, for the longest time I would leave truck in the garage unlocked with key FOB in it, was told by dealer that
I should lock it and take FOB inside the house to put the truck asleep......... Still having the issue Any reccomendations or expierence with this issue?

It sound like you have a parasitic current draw somewhere. Make sure all of the interior lights are off (I had an issue with the rear cargo area light being on accidentally because the switch is right near the sunroof control). You can also disconnect the negative battery terminal and connect an ammeter in series (+ side of the ammeter to the cable, - side of the ammeter to the battery) to check how much current draw you have. If it's more than a few milliamps, start looking for things that are still powered or pulling fuses until the draw stops. Typical issues are interior lamps, aftermarket stereos and alarms, etc.

You could also consider getting and connecting a battery maintainer (like a Battery Tender) while the car isn't being used. That will help keep the battery fresh too.

I suggest not leaving the key fob in the car. Who knows what chatter arises between car and fob while you're asleep? It's a cheap experiment...

thank you so much, I am going to schedule a test for amp draw at the dealer, as much as it pains me to go there, its easier then dealing with an unhappy wife

Agreed we are doing that now, I drive a 2014 ML and apparently this is not an issue until 2016 You need to put the car to "sleep" im being told

The key fob for my 2016 can be turned off by pressing the "Lock" button twice. It's supposed to conserve the battery in the fob. It will also lock the vehicle and enable the alarm system unless you do the button press with the fob wrapped in aluminum foil or are pretty far from the vehicle. The fob is turned back on by pressing any button on it.

It's true -- easier to deal with SA than unhappy wife.
1 even put to sleep, it may still drawing some currents and battery drops/degrades charges over times
2 may consider battery switch for long term park/under use car. Connect to negative pole at the battery -- under passenger's seat and easy to access to switch on/off.
3 new/2023 battery is not by default is good/healthy battery

A few weeks ago, I removed and returned Energizer battery made in German from Costco ($430) that I installed in April 2025. Replaced with EverStart made in Austria from Walmart ($230).
Reason: ECO stopped working a few months after installing the new battery -- (Aux battery replaced in 2023 by MB dealer under CPO warranty). It's hard to start when outside temp drop below -25C/-13F. It requires 39A to charge/high resistance. EverStart needs only 9A. ECO is working again for now. The time will tell.
