Simplest way is to use the fuel pump itself. Jump the fuel pump relay in the fuse box with a fused jumper wire, disconnect the main fuel line under the hood, stick it in a jerry can, and let the pump do the work. Just make sure you've got a good battery or a jump pack on it.

Sounds like you starved it. Pump probably got hot and might be damaged. Running it on air like that kills them. Could be on its way out.
