Help needed on ‘21 GLE63s

Hi, All,
New to MB World. In fact, new to AMG MBs. Just got the 2021 GLE63s. Found steering wheel missing the two round control knobs. Very perplexed. Talked to the sale guy and was told that the knobs are an option.

Picture online:

. Can someone please explain this to me? Every GLE63s video I see have those two control knobs on the steering wheels.

First off, congrats on the new car, hope that this missing piece doesn't kill off the excitement of owning the car.

The option is called "AMG Drive Unit" and I believe in the US, it comes as a separate option to add. Also, I think sometimes if you have a specific option, it can delete it (I think you can't have heated steering wheel *and* drive unit). In Canada, either all cars or a specific package adds it. I would suggest decoding your VIN online and seeing what comes back.

Anyways, it seems like there are some options online for retrofitting.

As nvez said, those are the AMG Drive Unit switches and knob. They are optional nad not a standard. Everything they perform can be done in the center console.

Congratulations on the new purchase and I hope it doesn't take away from your ownership experience!

There are some functions that aren't available on the console switches, but in the MBUX menus. And there's another not available in the menus.
They are mostly associated with track work and disabling the Nannies, and present warnings only to use on closed tracks.
They're also useful to access some menu items without drilling down through MBUX, but their main functions are for track work.

I should know the answer, but what functions are only available through the Drive Unit?

Nvez,

Happy new year!

Thank you for your spot on explanation. MBUSA called and then my dealership called to explain the exact same thing.
I do have the heated steering wheel option therefore it ‘deleted’ the drive unit. Frankly I was a little miffed at first but then I realized that as bad a driver as I am I’m better off without more distraction on the steering wheel so I can focus more on the drive part.

as to killing off the excitement of owning this car, there isn’t any chance of that. This thing rocks in all areas of driving.

BTW, can’t believe you are labeled as a newbie. Can’t imagine what an old hand on this board would need, PhD in Mercedology?

Thanks CincyMBGuy and mikapen, not much of a track guy. But occasionally will try my hand on a 1/4 mile track. We all know highway racings are ‘illegal’. Wink wink.

The drive controls on the steering wheel are specifically deleted on heated steering wheels (USA) for some crazy reason. Sad by true. Wish it wasn't!
