Oil stain on the top of the engine M157

Hello,
May I ask what is the oil stain on the right of the engine (when you stand in front of the car)?
I am looking to buy a used GLE 63s and I found quite a lot of them having the same oil stain there

is it caused by the timing cover leak?

Those tubes look like the outlets for the turbos to an intercooler. I think right next to those tubes under the plastic housing are some oil return lines for said turbos and the waste gates. In fact, I think one of the turbo impellers is just north of that tube, which means there’s a lot of oil pipes, tubing and the turbos themselves, all filled with oil, very close by.

However, I say this with caveats as I’m not familiar with this engine, but I am familiar with BMW V8s, which I had, and it, too, was a hot-vee setup.

Pull off the engine cover and look closely with a bright LED flashlight. Front cylinder head covers are common leak points from the factory. Dealer can reseal them and they generally stay resealed.

Unlike the BMW V8 mentioned in the previous post, the M157 is not a hot vee architecture. It uses traditional exhaust manifold-mounted turbos.

I’d be willing to bet that oil is dripping somewhere around the pulleys and is getting flung on to the turbo inlet pipes. I would say it’s either coming from the camshaft adjuster solenoid’s or the camshaft sensors or even worse possibly the valve cover gaskets

Yeah I didn’t realize MB’s V8s are traditional in the sense that the turbos aren’t in the valley but on the outside, meaning the exhaust manifold is normally placed instead of reversed for a “hot vee.” That means that tube is likely the intake after the intercoolers, and I have no idea what’s under the plastic.

Maybe it’s not necessarily oil but more charring/burning.

Well, that depends. The newer V8's use the hot vee turbos but the M157 uses a traditional turbo setup. The oil looking stain could be from belt wear. Just about every 157 engine has it and it will typically wipe off. Could be oil but that was not the case on my M157.

Yeah if the top of a drive or accessory belt is right there under the plastic than yes, it could be grime and other stuff kicked off the belt. It also makes sense in that it’s predominantly on one side, which I assume is based on the belt rotation.

There are pros and cons to using a hot V. One of the cons is that you can't use the big turbos, which have more lag. And one of the pros is that you have a shorter exhaust path for less lag.

The 63S gets the best of both worlds: Big turbo for max power, and EQ boost to eliminate lag.

Sorry for rejuvenating the post but the oil staining you are seeing is likely from the oil cooler housing which sits beneath that inlet tube. These, unfortunately, leak almost all the time. Even if you replace the gasket they will start to leak again. It’s best to just try and keep that area clean.

The staining on the air intake pipe is from a leaky Active Curve Pump.
