Is my AWD messed up?
Wife got stuck in the snow this morning in our 2017 GLE43. While helping her get unstuck, neighbour notices that only the front wheels are spinning. If neither wheel is getting traction, should't all four spin?

The W166 4MATIC system is a traditional mechanical system with chain-type transfer case and no front-rear torque transfer unless the Off Road Engineering package was optioned, which I am not aware was available on an AMG 43.

Not sure I understand the question about what was happening inside the vehicle? Everyone was upset that the car was stuck. 
None of the wheels had traction. The fronts were spinning and the backs were not.

What sounds was the car making as perceived from inside the vehicle? Whirring, clanking, knocking, banging, humming? Any warning lights or error messages?
What is your neighbor's automotive technology resume? In other words, does he know how all wheel drive systems work? The description in the original post is missing information.
