GLE63s - Max. Speed 12 mph

I just purchased a 2019 GLE AMG 63s, love the car. I had an issue with it last night, I was prompted with Max. Speed 12 mph in the display, could not clear, no buttons on steering wheel worked. Mercedes 24hr service said it cannot be cleared remotely and has to be towed - which I did. Tech now says not error code are present. has anyone seen this error?

Is it related to off road mode? Or is it a part/sensor failure?

Could only find this:

Most likely they hit the hill descent button.

I was told it’s called ‘Limp Mode’. The vehicle sensed an issue and it drops down to 12 mph max so you can get it to a shop without Causing more damage

I was also told next time turn the car off wait 30 minutes if there is not a true issue it will reset and you can resume your drive without any issues

Then why did it go into limp mode? A vehicle doesn't just do that without a defect unless you pressed a button so what was your issue?

That seems the most likely. It's the only thing I can think of other than car wash mode, that shows an actual speed. Which in the case of Hill descent, is 12 mph I think, downwardly adjustable with the cruise control stalk.

The only time I experienced limp mode was in a 2003 C-Class, and I think I saw "speed reduced." No "speed" shown.
And on my 167, when I went off track and broke/loosened an alignment bolt, but the message then was "do not exceed 50 mph."

What have others seen on a 166 that shows a specific speed?

The only time in any of the three I currently own and one that was totaled was the hill descent control.

OP, ever get any extra info on this? It got triggered on my 2017 just now when the tech was replacing my tires/TPMS sensors and the only thing I could figure out was that he accidentally hit the "raise car height" button (via the air suspension). Once I turned it off and it brought the height back to normal though, it's still showing up and I can't access anything through the console menu. I had never heard/read about Hill Descent Control on these models, so I'm extra confused.

I floored it down the street and it's definitely not in limp mode, lol

I can reproduce that anytime any day buy going to L mode, raising the car, and a few other ways....limp mode will have a flashing check engine.

Wait, you already figured it out. Hey, to change the oil - no jack needed! Raise the car...slide under, take off the steel rock guard (PITA) and away you go!

I get that it's a joke, but might that actually be doable?

I am absolutely not joking. It can be a real pain in the butt to get the metal shield off underneath the car but once you figure out the trick you can change the oil take the shield off and all that other fun stuff and about 45 minutes figuring I always give it about 20 minutes for it to drain

Anyone get to the bottom of this? This just popped up on my 2018 GLE 63s. It drives fine. No check engine light, and no codes from an OBD scan 🤷🏼‍♂️

Yeah, he had the car lifted. I can reproduce that "issue" ten times out of ten. Takes me about 90 seconds.

I would start by checking the ride height sensors and make sure there's not a broken arm on one of them.

Is your ride really hard? Like no suspension movement at all?

This is just a guess. Where you going from Drive to reverse three or four times in a row quickly? My CLE 53 will display limited speed when I do this. (I have do this when I pull out of my garage and there is a car on the far side.) I saw in the manual this is a design on AMG cars if you stuck in the snow.

In my case a slow move to Drive removes the restriction.
