This is a very different sequence from mine. All I have to do is press the lock button twice in quick succession. MB seems to be messing with the sequence in more recent model years or these instructions are wrong. Try double clicking the lock button instead.

In addition to hack avoidance, it's a good idea to keep the spare key some distance away from the car, so it doesn't keep waking it up.
I've seen 100 ft listed as a safe distance, to not communicate with the car.
I keep my keys in an RFID Box that blocks any potential signals from the keys. There are several companies that make them but this is the one that I bought: Theft Block
