24 GLE 53 AMG Coupe Check Engine Light: Malfunction & 48v Battery Messages

I’ve had my 2024 GLE 53 AMG Coupe for a tad over 8 months now and she’s only got about 5,600 miles and the check engine light came on today. The two messages that popped up said:

1. Malfunction with a picture of a gear. Nothing else.

2. 48v Battery. I don’t remember if anything else was on this message.

When the messages and CEL came on, the AC was starting to blow hot air. I did not have a chance to take photos of the messages, but when I turned the car off then back on again, the messages disappeared but the CEL stayed on.

My plan is to take it to Autozone to see what CEL codes come up. Then on Monday call my dealer to pick up the car and bring me a loaner to fix that and my list of other warranty work that needs to be done.

Has anyone had these messages pop up before or had similar issued with the 48v battery? The 48v battery message is making me nervous because I know the GLE with the 48v system is known to have issues.

It seems like nobody has had your experience.
In addition to your Autozone trip, don't forget that the general rule is that if the warning is steady it's OK to keep driving, but flashing means Stop ASAP.
Hope it's an insignificant problem.

I'm a bit surprised. I remember the 48v batteries being a notorious problem for the GLEs. I have a feeling no one really looks at this forums and they stay mostly in the regular GLE forum. I have the dealership scheduled to pick up the car on Thursday and to drop off a loaner.

Thankfully the check engine light went away after about 24 hours, but I still want them to check everything to make sure it's working properly. I also decided to not hit up Autozone because the CEL went away.

I agree about the forums.

It's good that your dealership will tow. It gets rid of that decision. 🙂
