Paddle shifter on steering wheel ?

well gear limiter or GLK's M mode is not completely worthless.
It's needed for towing and engine braking.
Also found it useful on back roads limiting to 3rd or 4th gear which kept rpms above 3k. Felt much more responsive, since engine had plenty of power and no shifting was necessary. Of course if I did this on daily basis I would have a different car.

Yes, one could force (or at least try) to start from a stop in 5th gear. I had a manual mode on a 7-series BMW and recall an embarrassing situation while driving it on Road Atlanta. I had been lapping in manual mode, came into the pits in 5th gear and forgot to shift into 1st or Automatic mode. So when the pit out flagman waved me back out, I limped away in 5th until I figured out why the 7er was so unresponsive. OOPS!
Paddle shifters are for performance vehicles... I love my GLK but I dont consider it a performance vehicle by any stretch.... I dont see a purpose for them if you arent full throttle needing both hands on the wheel.. IMO

I know that there are people who like the paddle shifters but IMO your hands have to be in the right place at the right time to use them. Two hands on the wheel may be better. I'm not a race car driver but it seems very intuitive for the shifter to be on the console. Then again if you are always on the straight aways then the paddles might work.
