Paddle shifter on steering wheel ?
It's needed for towing and engine braking.
Also found it useful on back roads limiting to 3rd or 4th gear which kept rpms above 3k. Felt much more responsive, since engine had plenty of power and no shifting was necessary. Of course if I did this on daily basis I would have a different car.
Paddle shifters are for performance vehicles... I love my GLK but I dont consider it a performance vehicle by any stretch.... I dont see a purpose for them if you arent full throttle needing both hands on the wheel.. IMO
