Oil Added
Thanks for the info. I was thinking that my GLK is due for something. I am approching 10,000km now thats like 6,000 miles. When I select the Service message system it says that I don't require any service for another 10,700km?
The system did ask me 2x to check the oil a few fillups ago... " check oil level at next fuel refill" I did the second time the message came up and it looked low so I added 1 litre of Mobile 1 5W30 and did not get the message again.
Looking at all the stuff they will do at 10,000 miles I can only immagine the bill $$ :-)

My Porsche dealer charges $12/quart for Mobil I so I suppose M-B won't be much different. And the 350 engine takes, what, nine quarts? I'd take my own oil but the dealer won't allow it.

that's scary
That's a good question for you long-time M-B owners. What are the typical Service A & B costs?

Nine quarts? that must be in MB measurements

I own or have built many high performance cars... (Porsche, Audi, MB, BMW etc) There are many here on MBW who agree with me that extended oil change intervals reflect a current trend among high end manufactures... it's in Vogue for a luxury car maker to advertise this! And why should they care? There's no real money in oil changes anyway especially with low mileage warranties. They figure many of their customers will suffer engine wear issues only after their 50,000 mile warranty expires.
I personally knew one of the chemical engineers that worked for Mobil for nearly 30 years before he retired. In contrast to popular belief, synthetic motor oil does not last any longer than conventional motor oils... think not? Then please show me where it's written that it does last longer and I'll show you a hoax. They may hint at it but I'm sorry to report but it isn't actually written anywhere that it does.
Syn oils do hold their properties a little longer, reduce friction at higher operating temperatures, are less prone to water retention, but they do become contaminated just like conventional motor oils do. Extended oil changes are a direct result of better engine manufacturing and engineering precision, thus less friction, less blow-by gases etc etc. However, there are other factors that contribute to oil breakdown regardless of what type it is. Poor driving habits such as pumping the accelerator instead of keeping a steady throttle, slow traffic commutes, cold engine starts, engine braking techniques, towing trailers, etc. These things all take a high toll on any oil.
We had a BMW that also required a 10,000 mile oil change interval with Mobil-1. At 100,000 miles, that engine was nothing but one large SLUDGE BOX... gummy and varnished with worn out valve stem seals blowing white smoke at every stop light.
If you took apart engines as much as I do, you would understand. Our new GLK will get the same initial treatment as all our new cars have.
Oil Change at 1000mi.
Again at 2000mi.
Then again at 4000mi.
Then every 4000 miles thereafter.
When you dismantle an engine after a 100,000 miles that's been treated like I describe above vs. one that hasn't or has followed the manufacturer's recommendation, it can be compared to a dentist looking into the mouth of a 50 year old person who brushed their teeth after every meal vs. one that only brushed before bedtime. Get the picture?

I believe in synthetic oil.
I mean, in my old 90s Japanese sedan, you can hear the difference of the engine rather it has synthetic or conventional in it. It's dramatic.
As far as extending intervals, I understand the additional additives in conventional to make it a multi-weight break down rather quickly, so you end up with a oil that is more of a straight weight. Synthetics can be multi-weight by their nature, so their breakdown over time is nowhere near as dramatic.
Furthermore, these Mercedes engines have 8.5 quarts of oil in them. 10,000 miles with 8.5 quarts of Mobil 1. That seems very reasonable.
The automatic transmission fluid change is very interesting. I understand originally the 7G TRonic was going to be never change the fluid. Mercedes quickly found out that wasn't a good idea. Then they switched to change it 1 time at 39,000 miles, now they have it absolutely every 4 years or 40,000 miles. It makes me wonder if even that is enough...

2011 GLK350 4 Matic
Hello all, I bought my 2011 GLK350 4Matic in July and just had an oil change done at my Mercedes dealer at 3,200 miles.
mac911 wrote: "Furthermore, these Mercedes engines have 8.5 quarts of oil in them."
After I got home I pulled the dipstick and the car was overfilled with oil quite a bit. I immediately called my service advisor who checked with the tech who said the same thing. 8.5 quarts is what the 350 engines get, and we do 100 of them a day. Btw. I was charged for 9 quarts of Mobil 1 ESP.
Well, my manual says 7.0 liters or 7.4 quarts, so I am guessing my car is overfilled at least a quart now. Can anybody explain this? Do the 4Matic's take less oil? I can't believe a Mercedes dealer can't get this right.

OK, did Mercedes change the oil pan for the 2011 model year? No wonder the mechanics are confused then. Here from page 295 of my manual:
Capacities
Vehicle model Capacity Fuel, coolant,
lubricants, etc.
Engine oil and filter All models 7.4 US qt. (7.0L) Approved engine oils

The MB online manual (German) for the GLK states 7.0 Liter for the GLK 350 4Matic (gasoline engine), but 8 Liter for the Diesel. To add to the confusion. The ML 350 (gasoline) requires 8 Liters also.
I will go to the dealer tomorrow to clarify. I was under the impression that all 350 (gasoline) have the same quantity, but obviously, there is a difference. I heard several GLK owners saying they had too much oil. This could be the reason.
EDIT Nov 17, 2010: Just back from the dealer. He checked his data and confirmed that my car (MY2011 350 gasoline) needs 7.4 quart or 7.0 Liter for an oil change to include the oil filter.
Most confusing, my owners manual shows 8 Liter !!!

The 4-Matic drive system on the GLK has part of the drive shaft running through the oil pan and that reduces its oil capacity compared to the rear wheel drive only versions.
Here is a diagram of how the drive shaft on 4 Matic-X204's looks:
4MATIC front drivetrain
1 7-speed automatic transmission with integrated transfer
case
2 Front propeller shaft
3 Front axle transmission
4 Left front axle shaft
5 Right front axle shaft
6 Drive to rear axle

Nothing special or different about the 4MATIC.
If I ever get my GLK and when I get to 12 months or 10,000 miles I will speak to the service folks about the oil cpapacity. My guess is that by then they will know all about the 2011-2012 engines.
