GLK 350 Aluminum Roof Rails

I just put a $5,000 deposit last week on a GLK 350 from MB Barrie. The dealer has located a GLK the color we wanted along with Sport Package. The vehicle should arrive at the dealership by the end of this week. However, I have been advised that the vehicle will come with black roof rails. Since I know that the Aluminum Roof Rails are now available, I asked the dealership if it would be possible to order the rails separately and get them replace on the vehicle before delivery. They are asking $2,500 to get the Aluminum Roof Rails installed on the vehicle. It looks to me to be way too much money, when the package only cost $800. Did anybody know how much are the Aluminum Roof Rails separately? Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't know how things are for where you're from but for Canada, the Aluminum roof rails are supposed to come standard with the Sport package.

Take a brochure and shove it in the dealer's face. It says in it that the sports package ($800) comes with 20'' Wheels and Aluminum roof rails. If your car doesn't have it then he should install it either for free, or give you an incentive for the missing part.

i know that's the case, but when I purchase my car, my dealer said the aluminum roof rails are only available to the first few months of production in Canada, as u can check out the Mercedes CA web site http://www.mercedes-benz.ca/DSCL2/cu...ipment_NUM=MSA
the aluminum roof rails are not available anymore!

There was a production shortage for the aluminum rails for a couple of months for both Canada and US orders. GLK's being built since the June production I believe are shipping again with the aluminum rails.

Personally, I don't like the black rails one bit. The aluminum rails look so much better and mesh nicely with the rest of the GLK's chrome accents. My recommendation, get the aluminum rails!

If the Aluminum Roof Rails are available again since June, any idea how much are they? Can they be purchased separately?

I have checked price and availability with Mercedes Canada on the Aluminum Roof Rail. Retail price in Canada is $900each, so $1,800 for the pair and $545us each in the USA.

LOL, talk about a price difference... Since the CDN faced shortages on them, they are just marking them up. With the dollar conversion it should be approx: 1200-1300 tops. not 1800+tax.

It's really confusing when you order this Sport Package option. I can only say it for Canada and not for the States. The Canadian site does not have the aluminum rail included in the "SportPackage" as I post. According to the sales, when you enter the MB ordering site, there are TWO "Sport Package" to choose from. One is the "Sport Appearance Package" which carries the 20" rims option ONLY, and the "Sport Package" which INCLUDES the aluminum rails. The cost however is the same, namely, $800.00 Canadian! The key is which one is available at the time when your sales actually enters his/her order for you. If you are lucky, like me, I believe, at the time when the sales enter your order, the "Sport Package" was not "grey out", in which case he could select it. If, however, it were "grey out", then he cannot click on that option. I think it is completely unreasonable for them to charge $900.00 Canadian for one aluminum rail. If you can get the "Sport Package" option in your order, it would indeed be a good deal. Just the difference between the basic 19" rims and the 20" rims is already more than $800.00 Canadian. You could consider the aluminum rails free!

I was thinking about swapping out my black rails for the aluminum...I think it makes the GLK look better. I believe to access the rail bolts the interior headliner must be dropped...and watch out for the side curtain airbags...but it can not be that big a deal...a Saturday project?

The dealership told me that it was a 3hr job. I don't know if you'll need any specific tools to complete the work.
If you're looking for a good price on the rails, check this website: www.mercedes.dealerfit.com. There are $410us, instead of $900can. You pretty much get 2 in the US for the price of 1 in Canada. Let me know how you make out, because I'm looking at doing the same thing.

Here is a link to all/most of the US options (but not accessories) and the option numbers. Since this is not an official MB site, YMMV, but it is a handy reference none the less. Not sure if it will be exactly the same for CA.

The US equivalent is the Appearance Package. It includes the 20" wheels and tires, and aluminum roof rails. I think that is the same as the CA Sport Appearance Pkg?

I personally would not mind the black roof rails since they would tend to sort of disappear visually, making the roof line look a bit cleaner.

I only bought ours with the Appearance Pkg since the dealer said the tires are the same size as the ones that would go on the 20" split spoke wheels we ordered. The price for the Appearance Pkg is roughly the same as for the tires alone, so if I can get a decent price on eBay for the 20" wheels that come with the Appearance Pkg, after swapping the tires onto the split spoke wheels, then I will be money ahead.

Here is a pic of a GLK with the Appearance Pkg aluminum roof rails and the 20" wheels that come with that pkg (US):

Aluminum Roof Rail Installation...maybe

One...order the aluminum roof rails from the USA (order from a Canadian dealer at $900 per rail)...

http://mercedes.dealerfit.com/store/...d909_31338.php

Problem...be close to the US border or have a buddy in the USA

Two...drop the interior roof header...

http://www.justanswer.com/questions/...-rails-know-de (click on READ MORE)

Three...don't deploy the side curtain airbags

I am going to take a "look-see" at the interior rail bolt locations.
I am working in Ottawa and relatively close to the US border.
Dealerfit will not ship to Canada, therefore a trip to Ogdensburg NY.
I may wait a month or two until the $CAN = $US.

Update, I just purchased 2 aluminum roof rails and the associated hardware from a local salvage yard. I am planning on swapping out the black rails for the aluminum rails.
NOTE: My GLK was one of the first ones in Canada and it came equipped with the black rails due to supply issues with the aluminum rails.
