iPod won't charge!!!

I recently purchased a GLK for my wife and it included the iPod connector. I got her the iPod Nano 4th generation. After I plugged it, I can listen to music, I can change it, but the iPod won't charge.
Does anyone had that same problem? 'cause it doesn't happen when I use my 30G iPod.
Any advice?

Exclamation Same Prob...But with iPhone

I was JUST about to make a thread regarding this, except about the iPhone 3G S instead.

When I first got my GLK, I had the iPhone 3G, & the car never charged it. However, I just got the iPhone 3G S yesterday, & when I plugged it into the car for the first time, it actually started charging it normally.
But, when I hooked it up again today, it was like the 3G all over again. It gave me that stupid message that this thing is not for the iPhone blah blah blah & so it doesn't charge it again.
Anybody know how we can get around that????

Thanks.

hm.. My old B&W 40GB iPod is charging just fine, but I haven't tried any of the 5 newer ipods/iPhones I have yet (don't ask). I'll try to test them out this weekend and get back to you.

I have been havng this problem since day one 4/8/09.
At dealer yesterday & M-B is well aware of the problem.
In fact it's with the $300 interface cable & I believe the ipod kit $375 works fine?

The new E350 & E550 does same thing as GLK350 does not work correctly.

I bought a "Smosche" adapter for $25.00 from Newegg.com & this makes my ipod charge.

Here's trick I learned over last 3 months & works fine for now till Mercedes comes up with fix?

Get in car & don't put key in ignition yet. The car will power on as to lights on dash.
Wait till dash lights go out & car powers off apprx. 1 minute? then enter key in egnition.
Now look @ your ipod & see that the battery charge is now lite. Do this every enter to car.

I also have 4th Gen Nano & my ipod classic did not work with this interface cable.

Thanks for the update, I guess I'll have to try and discover another way since the car will have the Keyless GO. Will keep you guys informed once I get delivery.

Keyless go will work same way as turning the key.
Just don't push button when getting in car & watch dash lights power off.
Then push your start button & your ipod charge light should now be on?

My understanding is that earlier iPods will charge because they will accept 12V whereas newer verisons such as my Nano 16GB which I got this past spring will not. They are 5V. I find the same on my new E350 4 matic wagon. However, it will charge and play if you use the USB cable that came with the iPod and use the USB cable in the connector. One point.
The album or song being played with show Ok in the screen with the USB cable but if you want to look at Albums and songs on sceen they come up as 4 alphanumeric set e.g. ABGT which makes no sense at all. My dealer is looking into a cable update that will bring the voltage into line such that the iPod will charge

Alex 3 has it correct...many iPod car chargers aren't working because they use the Firewire pins of the older generation iPods...the car battery supplies 12v which is within the Firewire specification. Cheaper for companies to use 12V directly rather than step it down.

OTOH, the 3G iPhone and current iPods only charge over the USB (5v) connector pins...they won't charge over the Firewire pins.

Adapters (and cables) are available.

Apple promulgated that forthcoming change over three years ago. But many companies didn't heed the warning.

.

My observation, with Ipod NANO 8 gig (Model A1199, not sure wot generation that is). It charges when the car is running, but doesn't turn off when car turns off, therefore battery drains has drained by next planned use.

I found that using my white IPOD USB cable (that came with the IPOD) in conjunction with the MB provided USB glovebox cable, it solved this problem for me.

B67824531 is the part number given me that will allow the system to charge a Nano. I cannot confirm that this is the answer until I get one in my hands

Bad news. I got my hands on the cable suggested but it does not fit anywhere on cars that use Comand to run the iPod so I still have to choose between running the battery down and seeing all the playlists etc on the screen or using the USB cable adapter to keep it charged but lose the functionality of being able to look at playlists etc. while it recharged. Mercedes Benz Canada's tech group apologized to the tech for leading him astray and ordering the cable and admitted while they know about the issue they have no fix for it. They of course blame Apple for not telling them the Nano and newer generations are 5V. This begs the question as to why their software is incompatible with all the iPod functions in USB mode since most USB outlets are 5V.

Your older iPod is 12v while the new one is 5V. There is no 5V pin set in the iPod adapter. Your USB cable will charge it as it is 5v but you will lose functionality in the iPodwhich illustrates once again MB does some weird things.

Are there new cables available?

So what's the verdict? My COMAND Media Interface iPod cable (the set that comes with AUX & USB as well) doesn't charge the iPod 3GS.

Do others have better luck?

I only have the ipod kit in my GLK and I was experiencing the same issue. It turned out that it was my clear plastic case that was preventing my nano from charging as it wasn't allowing the GLK cable to sink in all the way.

The issue is that Apple, when it brought out the Nano and iPhone changed the pin arrangements in these devices such that the pins that take power off the 12 v system are not in the same place as the the earlier Apple devices and they cannot get power.
The only way to get power to your iPod and iPhone from the car is to use the USB connector that plugs into your car via the same plug in the glove box assuming the E class and others use the same achitecture for these devices.
If you use the USB with a Nano regardless of what settings you have in your Nano re Shuffle and regardless of what your set up is on your computer and regardless of how you have play back set in the car, the Nano will be always in shuffle unless mine is unique.
If you want to play an ablum right through you have to use the other cable supplied with the car and it will not charge the device.
I would expect that with the iPhone on the USB the Bluetooth would not see any change. I don't use an iPhone so I just use a regular car charger which works fine and the phone interfaces fine.

I picked up my GLK 350 last night and first thing I did was plug my iPhone 3GS in. It did not charge it.

Picked up the Scosche passPORT from Futureshop. Perhaps there are different models. The adapter did NOT charge (but could play music, this placed properly) and whenever I plugged it in, the 'this accessory is not made to work with the iPhone, ....'

GO TO YOUR DEALERSHIP!

this happened with my iPhone 3GS, i went to my dealer, the iPod integ kit has a one year warranty, and tell them they need to update the cable.

the dealer did this for free for me. its an updated cable that JUST recently came out < 3 weeks.

I picked up the new cable. It does indeed charge. However you get the 'this device is not compatible with the iPhone...' But it does charge
