Oil and Washer fluid questions...

My new GLK is using a little bit of oil. No biggie. This is normal. So I was going to get some to top it off through the first 10K miles or so. I know MB says use Mobil 1. That's fine. But does anybody know what weight they use at the Factory?

Also, does anybody know where to get genuine MB windshield fluid other than the Dealer? I like the fluid because it foams up really good when washing the windshield and lights. I'm sure MB asks like $50 for a bottle of it.

It does several times... I'll repeat it...

"As far as the correct oil is concerned, the oil MUST conform to the MB-229.5 specification. However, the correct viscosity and type used by the factory in our GLK is Mobil-1 Formula-M 5w-40. This oil must be used year round and can ONLY be purchased at the dealer for now.

WARNING: Please do not confuse this oil with Mobil-1 ESP Formula-M 5w-40. They sound alike but they are NOT THE SAME. ESP is for diesel engines ONLY! Also, please DO NOT GET the “over the counter” straight Mobil-1 5w-40 either. This oil does not meet the strict Mercedes Benz 229.5 spec."

But to top it off, say 1/2 quart or less, any full Mobil-1 syn. multi grade will do.... more than that please see above.

Mobil-1 Formula-M 5w-40

I went to my dealer and they didn't have it, just the ESP for diesel.
He said they use Quaker brand. I'll have to try another dealer.

How about wipers, those in OEM form suck, mine started squeaking after 4 months (summer months, and I park in garages). I'm not the only one with this. Gonna get Bosch or PIAA after winter.

2010 steel grey GLK with lighting pkg
i highly recommned this one. its cheap and its ammonia free; so if you have the headlight washers, i don't think it will yellow up your plastinc lens. It foams as well as the factory one.

What's the total oil capacity for the GLK? Also...I noticed one website (I believe in Canada) referenced using Quaker State Synthetic Oil. Is Quaker State ok to use?

Thanks MBR and do you know how much oil the GLK holds in quarts?
I'm looking for a spec sheet listing the capacity for all the fluids.

You can try Castrol Syntec/German Castrol (0W-30) that meets 229.5
GLK holds 8L of oil! i guess don't need to buy more than 8L

More and more companies are now producing Syn Oil that meets the MB-Spec... it's basically a different ratio mix of additives (multi-weight extenders) etc...

Both US and Canadian GLK's use 8.5 qts or 8L of oil with filter change... Please read your owners manual... ?????? Refer to page 334.

went to MB dealer for the windshield washer, wasnt that bad...its $2.80 including tax...they give you this small cylinder with the concentrated washer and you basically mix it with 4 liters of water.

just had my oil changed

at just under 4,000 km. Bought 9 liters of Mobil 1 syn 0w-40 from canadian tire at 9.79, a fuel filter from mb for 24.55 and 20.00 to my mechanic to do the change. needed only 8 liters so total cost before taxes about 125.00.

the concentrate for the windshield washer is 3.69 each.

so all in all pretty cheap.

Firstly: The price - in my country we pay $ 13,5/litre ($ 13,5/,2642 US gallons)

Secondly: Unlike the US GLK Operator's manual, is mine with regard to the chapter "Washer system and headlamp cleaning system", having a: "! Highlights hazards that may result in damage to your vehicle.". In short state it that use of an improper concentrate may cause harm to the headlight plastic lenses. As I read it, are not all brands to be used uncritically. Meaning: A certain concentrate or a different washer fluid may cause graceful (i.e. over time) degradation of the lenses. This was as well one of the few issues the dealership mentioned when we picked up the new GLK.

Yes this IS the case..... most washer fluids in the USA are formulated to clean GLASS windshields mainly. 99% of all cars sold in the States do not have headlight washing spray heads that fire this stuff at high pressure at polycarbonate lenses.

Therefore the formula MUST be made for the polycarbonate lenes of your headlights as well. Read the instructions, and alcohol in the formula is a NO-NO.

Just get Mobil 1 0w40 . It is at EVRY Parts store and it is APPROVED for Mercedes, you can see the 229.5 spec right on the back of the bottle. However, it is not approved for diesels, but your car isn't a diesel.

The cars from the factory, except AMGs, actually come with some kind of Shell Synthetic oil, strange I know, but they have some contract with Daimler.

Just use the Mobil 1 0w40 to top up, and it will be fine.

The washer fluid fill ups aren't that much money from the dealer. ALso, when you have service, they always top mine to the top (which is odd as I never use it. I feel it's bad for paint and whatnot).
