temperature and vent speed is calculated based on the temp sensor outside the cockpit, usually inside the front grill and also the temp sensor inside the cockpit...
if it's going to be decide by sun...all of us will freeze to death in Canada during one of the cheating sunny cold day...with absolutely b-e-a-utiful sunshine...but -30+ windchill...
trust me guys, it's a light sensor...to be used for auto lights...including headlights...interior...etc...
sometimes, it's also a indicator for alarms...

When the head foreman went along for a drive with my to diagnose my squeaky brakes I had a chance to ask him.
That little cap in your picture is indeed the light sensor.
And the little mesh covered hole under and by the ignition is the internal temperature sensor.

The cap covers the laser sensor. This is a leftover from the German automobile manufactures safety council program to improve safety by taking cars away from drivers that demonstrate poor driving skills. The theory is bad driving often causes accidents while not actually being involved in it. In Europe if you do something dumb other drivers can send your auto a signal by laser. If you receive 5 tags in a year’s time you receive a fine, in 3 years if you have 8 or more the German auto manufactures will not sell you a new car. If you have 12 your driver license could be revoked. I think it still works in here. You can check your status at night by putting your hand under the rear view mirror if there is no colored light you’re good, but if it is light yellow all the way to bright red you got tagged for doing something stupid.

Have you check your status, at night by putting your hand under the rear view mirror if there is no colored light you’re good. I may have given your GLK it's first tag.

The cap is there in our SLK, it's present in other vehicles with sunlight sensing capabilities MB or non-MB. I'm like 99% sure it's the sunlight sensor. That and I asked the head foreman at MB service...
