How to approach 30 MPG

1. Perform a complete wax job (reduces aerodynamic drag).
2. Inflate tires to max allowable (lowers rolling resistance).
3. Never exceed 55 MPH, except when coasting down hills.
4. Draft trucks and other large vehicles (NASCAR training required).
5. Avoid hills. Only drive downhill.
6. Do not strap dog or other items to roof rails. This increases aerodynamic drag dramatically.

There you have it.

5a. Always drive downwind.

We may be using more fuel, but our intake valves will be clean.

I finally got it! The 21 to 22 highway MPG rating is at 100 MPH! MB and EPA kept it a secret!

And to think I've been worried sick about my intake valves, obviously for no good reason!

I expect the 2013 GLK to come with the Direct Injected 3.5 liter engine. The jury is still out on long term valve life in that engine. New ain't always better.

Recent trip from Austin to OKC...with a tail wind we got 27.5. Return trip with a head wind we got 22.7. We ran 70-80 mph most of the way.

2014 CLA 45 AMG; 2012 GLK 350 4MATIC (totaled); 2009 VW GTI (sold)
Weekend before last I did a 660 kilometer round trip from Calgary to Edmonton, AB and back. I got 10.4 L/100 km (22.6 MPG) on the highway doing ~120 km/hr. It might sound good, but I was a little disappointed. Having come from a GTI, which used to get 6.9 L/100km highway, I guess I should not be surprised at the GLK. What amazes me is that my folks have a 2012 R350 Bluetec, the vehicle weighs over 5000 lbs and still gets 7.9 L/100 km (30 MPG) on the highway with the diesel!!

Just drove Philly area to Nashville and back, 25.5 mpg going 5 mph over the limit. In most parts of I 81 the limit is 70 so that's not bad mostly driving 75.
