Long trip, good MPG

I guess the best way to get acquainted with your new car is take it on a long trip. My wife and I just completed a 1400 mile trip from the central coast of California to Tucson, Arizona and back. We took 2 days to go down, but did the full distance back in one day.

I'm sure I don't have to mention how comfortable the vehicle is, but that fact sure made the long trip enjoyable. In addition, the Nav and trip computers are awesome. I was pleasantly surprised that we got 25 MPG for the entire 1400 miles which included a fair amount of city driving while in Tucson. Also, we ran the AC for probably 90% of the trip. I think the 4matic is rated at 16/21, so we beat the tar out of that. I had the cruise control set at 65 to 75 for most of the time with occasional sprints up to 85 to get around trucks.

I was amazed that when we arrived home last evening that I did not suffer from TB after 11.5 hours in the saddle. All in all, a wonderful vehicle.

Very very slow
It's good that you get that kind of mileage.
It would better if you can drive your car at 50 mph or 80kph.
But again who would want to drive their GLK at 50mph on the interstate.

Driving down hill only works best for me

Mileage

Glad to hear that. Haven't checked the GLK yet. Only 350 miles.
Took a trip in my wife's C300 and got 30mpg.

We ran out to the beach this weekend about 125 miles & got 23mpg in wind, rain, AC, Sunroof @ 80mph mostly - no cruise control.

Great to see the mpg issue are over exaggerated.

Interesting thought. What would be your best guess as to MPG at 50 MPH. I'd guess high 20's. Problem would be finding a highway to try it. On the interstate you'd probably get run over. Or flipped off.

Or die of boredom before the first refueling stop. In which case you wouldn't know what the mileage was.

Ha, ha, ha, ha! Very true! Besides, the GLK just loves to run, so why hold it back? During the times I had it up to 85 or so to pass trucks it felt like we were doing 60. What a road machine!

I wish you could hear the weeping and fussing and shouting from the Navigator/Co-Pilot seat when I hit 100mph in the course of passing on a 2 lane road.
"I do that for safety, Dear. The less time we spend in the left lane is for your protection."
Didn't make a dent in the tirade about speeding and tickets.

I guess I'm pretty lucky in that respect. For starters, my wife absolutely loves our GLK and is always finding some excuse to jump in it and go somewhere (we just retired, so time is not an issue). I have never, ever seen my wife so excited about a car. Usually it was just ho-hum, whatever.

On the road the most she ever says is, "what are you doing?" and that was once when I sped up in the right lane of a 4-lane freeway to move away from some idiots who insisted on cruising right next to me. So, I explained my move and that was the end of the conversation.

In short, I made a lot of points when I picked out the GLK

Mrs. Wayne loves her GLK 350 as well. It's my driving that she can't live with.
I too will do anything necessary to avoid the lane Creepers who insist on cruising for hours wheel to wheel with another vehicle. DUMB! and DANGEROUS! When approaching such a pair of Morons from behind, the Bi-Xenon high beam flashers drive them into a panic. Good for a grin. Then suck their doors off as I go by and put some distance between us & them.

Very glad to see that the GLK can get 25MPG+. So far we've driven our GLK about 400 miles, and we are averaging 19mpg - streets and uphill/downhill canyon driving. I can't wait to see how our trip to Las Vegas will go. I'm estimating about 27-30MPG on Economy mode!

GLK mileage improves with miles. As things loosen up, the mileage increase. That is our experience. Economy mode does nothing for highway fuel consumption. You will be in 7th gear @ ~ 2,100 rpm/70mph regardless of E or S mode. Aerodynamic drag is your biggest fuel consumer at highway speeds.

27 to 30 MPG seems a bit optimistic, but who knows. Perhaps if you keep the speed under 60... [yawn]

Speaking of the E and S mode, I thought it would be neat if there was some way to get into the firmware (or whatever) and change the S for Sport to R for Race.

Yes I am being very optimistic. I have a feather foot and will travel at about 70mph, it's all about driving technique to master "Gas Saving Driving".

I would assume there should be a tuner out there that can throw a dyno tuned map on S mode. We have tuners for Subaru's that do that.. Maybe call up MHP, Kleeman or EuroTuner to give them the idea?

I only drive in E mode and trust me, I can't get more than 24mpg with about 75% highway driving so 27-30mpg is not possible.

It will be slightly better but not much from the mileage you've got.
The engine is running around 1800rpm.
I think it's snoozing too....because I can't barely hear it.
I tried to go at that speed before and 3 minuted later.....I GAVE UP.
It's boring for the GLK and it's boring for me too.

There are thousands of miles of paved roads in the USA & Canada where 50mph would be dangerous to suicidal. You just have to find them. Or, you let my spousal unit navigate. She can find miles & miles of roads with a 55mph speed limit. And she enforces speed limit adherence.

Gas mileage

Bought a new 2012 GLK in Philidelphia Thursday afternoon and just drove it 1250 miles back to Minnesota. Computer says 22.7 MPG which I think is good considering I was going between 68 and 73 MPH for the whole trip. Really impressed with the ride quality and Multimedia package computer and navigation. Was an impossible car to find with the options I wanted ( I located three in the whole US over 50K sticker) as I wanted and got, leather seating package, lighting package, Harmon Kardon stereo, parktronic, premium 1 and multimedia package, heated seats. Kept thinking I would order a 2013 but not a fan of the new styling changes and 2012 production stopped early this year so my options were limited. Some great deals out there on 2012's - I got 13% off sticker with conquest, loyalty etc discounts.

You are correct sir! I avg. 24MPG on my trip yesterday which was about 80 mi and ~90% highway driving.

I agree, too. I think the 25 MPG I got was about the upper limit for the 4matic GLK. After all, we achieved that on a 1400 mile round trip, and that's a pretty long distance at highway cruising speeds. Less than 100 miles of that was in the city.

For what it's worth, I did check the mileage with fill ups vs mileage (map mileage) and the trip computer seems to be very accurate.

Yeah @ some point physics takes over & moving around 2+ tons is not going to do much for fuel efficiency.

All those people clamoring for the diesel version of the GLK - I just don't see 30+.

Amen! Going to have to see it to believe it. Proven with a calculator. Not the on board display. Our computer generated MPG seems to be about 10% optimistic.

You mean 2+ tons with the aerodynamics of a brick!

I drove up to Carmel a few weeks ago and averaged 22, but most of that was at 80 - 100 mph so I think I did just fine.

Mine is a 2wd, BTW...
