Bought a GLK today

Hi GLK'ers, finally pulled the trigger and bought a 2010 GLK. Here are some details:

Year - 2010
Mileage - 15,000
Model - 4Matic
Cost - $27300 + tax/license = $29,998 out the door
Original owner - Lease return to MB Financial
Color - black
Panoramic roof - Yes
Navi - No
Entertainment package - No
Warranty - through Jan 9, 2013
Finance - 2.99% through credit union
Bluebook value - $34K

I have been reading and didn't find too much on some issues I have, and I would like to ask for the expertise of the forum for some help with some questions/issues:

1. I want to add an OEM navigation system. Bad idea?

2. Leather seat - there is a small tear on the driver side, by the seam. I have some read that there has been some success, but unlikely that it will be replaced under warranty?

3. The weatherstrip torn - From what I have read, it's 50-50 to get it replaced under warranty. Advice?

4. I want to buy warranty... MBFinancial vs. Credit Union vs. Third party, or?

5. Are there any recalls, and am I due for anything at 15K?

6. Stupid question... How do I find out if I have a 7 speed trans?

7. Any MB service adviser in Socal who can help out a noob with parts and services?

Thanks in advance for helping out a new owner of a Mercedes!

Very very slow
Congrats & Welcome.

to you questions:
1. It's nice to have OEM Navi but not worth at this point.
2 & 3. Try to claim it under warranty. You've got nothing to lose there.
4. That's a personal choice. For me, through MB is best.
OR save the coin and take a chance (my personal choice).

Thanks so much for the input!

1. Navi - an after version isn't a deal breaker, but if I can get one installed for $600-800, I would, as this is for the wife.

2. Leather seat - I will try to claim it through warranty and report back

3. Weatherstrip - I will try to claim it through warranty and report back

4. Extended warranty - am I able to buy one through MB? And, are there different tiers?

As far as the warranty goes, just wanted to throw the name Mercury Insurance Group out there. You can quote your vehicle at www.extended-vehicle-warranty.com and also view sample contracts that will provide you with coverage detail. Then you can use that info for comparison shopping.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum.
You should have 7 speed. As you drive say around 55MPH, nudge the shift lever to the left, and the dash display will show 6 instead of D, as the transmission downshifts to 6th gear.

Get a warranty if yours runs out in Jan. I bought the MB warranty as it's easier to just take it to the dealer and have them deal with it, and get a loaner in the mean time.
I have seen complaints where some private warranty companies deny claims for silly reasons. Read before signing.

Have fun.

I will try that out! Just found a thread with a link to the owner's manual so I will be read that as well.

I have been on the fence about the warranty (keep $3-4K aside in a GLK fund vs. buying a MB/3rd party / insurance company / credit union warranty).

I am too on the fence about extended warranty.
I have never buy extended warranty for any of my previous cars.
Somehow I am on the fence about GLK.

I spoke to a rep from MB Canada few weeks ago, and she said that I can get extended warranty through MB as long as the GLK is still under factory warranty.
When the factory warranty runs out.....I can't get extended warranty through MB after that.
I still have a few months to think about it.

Get the warranty before your factory one runs out in Jan. $3-4 thousand as a self insured fund will not make you happy if your $7500 7Gtronic transmission dies.
Many single parts on this vehicle, even though not prone to failing, will chew though 3 grand in the blink of an eye. Gauge cluster, COMMAND radio etc.
Here are a few items that the extended warranty saved me on my ML.
Transmission, rear hatch motor, both front CV axles, and some other stuff I cant think of right now. Easy over $10G's, and I paid $3100 for the policy. So when I bought the GLK for my wife, the extended warranty was happily part of the deal.

Do your homework. There may be exclusions in an extended warranty. Do not assume that an extended warranty covers the same things that are covered by the original warranty.

You're right Wayne.
I know the battery is one of the few items' NOT covered under extended warranty.

I called MB yesterday, and here's the pricing structure after discount:

7 years/ 75k miles - $2900
7 years/ 100k miles - $3800

Since our GLK is at 3.5 years, and 15K miles, we are looking at the first option.

I was able to talk to a MB dealer who said that the warranty at the credit union might be exactly the same, but costs less. I will compare this with the credit union and report back.

You sir, have pointed out what I am insecure about in repairs because I know you're right. I am now leaning towards the extended warranty side...

Here's the update:

1. I want to add an OEM navigation system. Bad idea?
Going to look into an aftermarket GPS/backup camera combo

2. Leather seat - there is a small tear on the driver side, by the seam. I have some read that there has been some success, but unlikely that it will be replaced under warranty?
I have not brought this up yet...still strategizing.

3. The weatherstrip torn - From what I have read, it's 50-50 to get it replaced under warranty. Advice?
MB will cover this under warranty

4. I want to buy warranty... MBFinancial vs. Credit Union vs. Third party, or?
I will likely go through the credit union.

5. Are there any recalls, and am I due for anything at 15K?
Bought it to the dealer last weekend and either it's been done, or there was nothing to do other than to adjust some door stoppers.

6. Stupid question... How do I find out if I have a 7 speed trans?
7!

7. Any MB service adviser in Socal who can help out a noob with parts and services?
Still searching

FWIW, odds are good that your seats are MB-Tex and not real leather...

I just checked, and you're right...(how do we not know? we're noobs)

I have called a couple of dealers and they are telling me that it's not covered, even though it's looks to me like a defect. It's at the edge where the side wall meets the upper part of the seat where you sit.
