Smile Roll down windows from the remote key?

I know many cars have this feature: on a very hot day you approach your car, press and hold "unlock" button for 3-4 seconds and windows are being rolled down. Or when you get off the car and forgot to roll up a window, you can press and hold "lock" key at the remote and windows are being rolled up.

Is it possible to do the same on GLK? Worked once for me but then I tried both unlock and lock keys - didn't seem to work. How can I do this? GLK Canadian, 2010.

you have to directly hold your key aiming towards to driver side door handle (Infrared black thing), (unlock to open all windows, lock to close all windows)

On all models or just Canadian? (Which would make sense since we all know how much hotter it is up there than, say, Texas!)

Not completely sure about this, but you need to reprogram the remote key first by holding a few buttons simultaneously. It's in the OM!

It works but it's kinda pain to point it directly to the driver side door only.

Yep. The Jag does it from a distance.

That said, it's been 100* the last few days, and it's OK to stand by the door for a minute while the car airs out the 140 degree air.

Thanks guys for replies! Anyone knows why it is made so complicated? Why not to make it work simply via radio channel? Why MB decided to complicate the engineering and install infra red received, transmitter and make this feature work with that? This approach required additional work, small devices, and therefore extra money?

What is the actual engineering need to make it work via InfraRed but not via just Radio?

They probably wanted you to be right next to your car when you're operating the windows rather than accidentally doing it from down the block.

So, I guess if I accidentally open the tail gate from down the block - there is no big deal? But if I roll down windows - there is a problem?

It is due to liability issues that it has such a short range.
The way it is set up you have to be close enough to the vehicle to visually make sure you don't close the windows or pano roof on some unsuspecting car thief trying to vandalize your car.
Of course if I did catch someone vandalizing my ride, I would rather use the old rusty pocket knife rather than risk damaging the window.

Could you share your source of information? Very curious.

it is more correct to say that MB CHOSE that route. It is not REQUIRED, as other manufacturers do not do that.
I'm not saying MB necessarily made the wrong choice, but it was a choice, not a mandate.

No need to reprogram anything; it just works.

I'd prefer if it worked from a bit more distance so the car could ventilate as I approached it, but it's still nice to know about.

It's nice to be able to open and close everything with one push of the remote....same feature on all models for quite a while. Re: working from a distance.. I really don't think that the distance/10 seconds extra time that the windows are open will cool down a hot car very much. I actually like being close and watching everything open.

If you have the power tailgate you can open it from about 150'-200' away. Would that provide enough ventilation?

If you have nothing in the trunk then I guess it's not a problem.
You'll think twice if have something ( or lots of stuff) in there.

Also, open all the windows + tailgate make it even better ventilation.

I didn't say it was a good idea. I just said it's possible.
We do open the tailgate well in advance of arriving with a cart full of groceries. We shop where it isn't a problem from 20'-30' away. An advantage of living in the woods.

the saying "beating a dead horse" applies to this thread. The power lift opens from a distance...the all windows does not...that's how MB made it...both are nice features...live with it.

Maybe this thread is dead but we GLK owners, as a consumer, should point these little annoying/flaw feature(s) so that MB will update them in the future.

If we just shut up and accept what is then we'll never see it or anything improve in near future.
