Mercedes C200
2013 GLK 300 AMG vs Evoque

Hi guys,
Its time for me to buy a SUV, i have owned 2012 Mercedes C200 and yet become a MB fan.
i have test drive the Evoque but not the GLK since its new released and won't be available for test drive, i live in Vietnam.
the 2013 GLK 300AMG, its 3.0 not 3.5 like in the US, cost me almost $100,000. The Evoque will cost around $130,000. so its 30,000 difference, is it worth it. I really the Evoque though.
My family consists of only me and my wife, but i would like some spaces in the back seat also. let me know your opinions about the GLK.
thanks

100,000 for the GLK???? I got it for around 42,000 only. I honestly am very happy with the GLK in every single way. My passengers dont argue about leg room at all, and the truck space is good enough. The drive is smooth and the interior is very simple and I like how it looks. I own a 2011 model so I'm pretty sure the 2013 looks even better inside. The AMG models looks stunning in my opinion and the wheels don't bother me at all. If you have any specific question you can ask me but I haven't seen an evoque interior nor have driven one yet. In my opinion mercedes cannot be compared to any other brand, it's strong and reliable. Range rover looks nice but may trouble you with maintance..

I test drove the Evoque last month, was suprised how much I liked it! If the money was similiar I would consider, but I can't quite see paying that much more for a turbo 4 cylinder from a company with questionable reliability.

Love my AMG package, think it really makes the truck (appearance pkg. looks great as well).

N91K.... taxes for new vehicles in Vietnam are crazy high. That's why it's so freaking expensive.

Anvu.....for styling between the two vehicles. It's all depends on personal's taste.
For me, i do not like the Evoque's look. From brochure, the interior of the Evolque does look nice.
Between the two, I'll definitely go for the GLK.
Perhaps you can opt for 2WD version instead of 4matic.
Since there's no snow in Vietnam.
About the rear leg room, no one in my family complained about it (yet).

As david1201 mentioned, reliability of the Evoque is very questionable.

I've owned 4 different Rovers, Defender 90 (135,000 miles), Range Rover (125,000) miles, Freelander (50,000 miles) and a Sport (78,000) miles. I gave up on them because of the maintenance cost. Read the Rover forum http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/ to help make up your mind.
I found that because they make so few that they all seem to suffer from the same problems. If some one reports that the o-rings in the heater go bad at 100,000 miles on the P38 (Range Rover in the '90s), every P38 suffers the same problem. By the way, that was a $2.00 item which costs ~$1000 in labor to fix. The small Freelander was the worst. Actually it was suppose to be the most popular European small SUV, when it had the BMW diesel engine. In the USA they put a 2.5 liter twin cam Lotus engine in it which needed cam belt replacements at 80k miles where the engine had to be removed to replace. LR sold the engine and all rights to China and when the engines went bad, about 50kmiles, LR could not get new replacements. You don't see many on the road today. Mine went bad at 49,500 miles and was replaced. The L320 (sport) had the suspension air compressor replaced at ~ 50k miles as do many. The air suspension would go bad around 90k miles on the P38. There are many after-market non-air suspension conversions available because of this problem
Don't get me wrong, I loved the trucks, but got tired of the repair costs. I used the off road ability many times and actually won a log crossing contest in the Defender at an Off Road meet.
The build materials are second to none. You will find that the electronics lag dramatically behind the Japanese and somewhat behind the Germans.
Now that Tata is the owner, I don't know how the build quality will change. I sold my Sport because there were many reports of differential problems at about 90,000 miles. Was in paranoia or did I really hear a wine?
Having owned many MB's, 300SD's with over 250,000 miles each, a CLK and a C class, and not needing a big SUV, the GLK looked right for my use. With 36,000 miles and not yet needing tires, I would pick the GLK over the Evoque, unless you really like the looks and are going for a 2 year lease. Then get what you like as the problems will all be under warranty. If not leasing, get the extended warranty and remember, if MB dealers are not close together, LR dealers are very far apart and you need to find one with a good service manager.

Diesel option would be great to have in VN

I would stay away from the AMG package if it has the 20" wheels because roads in VN are bad. Between the 2 choices you gave I stick with MB, it's more reliable.
