Why All The Scripts?
As an owner of 3 Mercedes vehicles, I am very thankful for the information provided by MBWorld.org. However, I find it somewhat disturbing to find that this forum and the other 2 that I visit invoke multiple scripts from various sources including:

Why are all of these scripts necessary and what purpose do they serve?

slk55er, I can answer this for you. I work in the IT arena, and my primary focus is in web / application development. So I am familiar with these 3rd party scripts. 
There are two types of scripts being run here. The majority of them are for metric gathering. These scripts are used by this forum to justify to their current advertisers why they should continue to advertise. It also allows them to show potential advertisers what kind of traffic they generate.
The other scripts are used to generate revenue by displaying adds for the site. The site gets a little bit of money for displaying ads. Currently at the top of my screen I see an ad for a Suburu Outback lease.

slk55er, I'm a mac user as well.
I will have to look into AdBlock to see what they have to offer. These ads on some of the boards I frequent are a huge pain. I have been a Firefox fan for YEARS. It's one of the primary browsers I use when I am developing a site's UI, but I still use the other major ones as well. When it comes to the web you can't pigeon hole yourself to one particular browser. Have to make sure it works with almost all of them.

I see two unobtrusive banner ads, one at the top and one at the bottom of the page, but they don't bother me at all.
