US Spec vs Canadian Spec GLK250 & conversion

US Spec vs Canadian Spec GLK250 & conversion

Looking to buy a GLK250. I am in the US Navy getting ready to be stationed in Halifax for 3 years. I gave the VIN# to a dealer there to see what needed to be done to convert to Canadian spec. $1500 for a gauge cluster, $71 for keyless go button, installation to Canadian spec, and a MB Admin fee of $500 for a total of $3082.72.

Can someone spell out the actual differences?

1500$ for the dash ... not sure ...

I'm in Canada and the digital speedometer is configurable in the vehicule setting menu for km/hr or miles/hr.

Of course, the analogue speedometer is in km, yours will be in miles.

Take it to a Canadian Tire, they are the ones who do the inspections for people importing cars from the US.

No way it should cost that much. For the speedo I think they just give you some stickers that you can promptly remove after the inspection.

I am retired from the Canadian Air Force. However, I was posted to Washington and Dayton Ohio and at the border with the US I was importing my Can Spec cars under a NATO Travel Order and as such the taking of these cars into the US on a posting was not a problem and I retained Canadian plates on my car just as if I had gone on a holiday.
So you might check with your admin people re this posting and/or check with the Military attaches at the US Embassy in Ottawa as I am sure the mil staff there woulkd have the answers. Personally I don't think that you have a problem with a exchange posting to Canada. Only issue would possibly be if you wanted to sell your car in Canada which you would likely be prohibited from doing.

If the speedo can change to km/h there is really nothing else that you need to do other than pass the provincial inspection.

You also need DRL's here in Canada but I'm fairly certain most newer US-spec models have these now anyway.
