Gentex Auto-Dimming & Homelink Rearview Mirror
I need to ask this and I'll probably get the (bad) news that I expect, but has anyone had experience or know information on the topic of installing a Gentex auto-dimming and home link rear view mirror.
I purchased a 2011 GLK350 last month, and I (sort of) knew that there might be a problem with the vehicle not coming with an auto-dimming & home link mirror…and I was right. I am worried that there is no wiring harness up in the console area for the Gentex to get the right kind of power…or power at all.
I read on this form that the MB stealership will (possibly) do it for $600 parts & $200 labor; that is way too much for me.
Like I said, if anyone knows anything about changing out the (standard) rearview mirror please let me know
Thanks!!!

If it's a 12Volt switched power you're looking for you could always tap into your glovebox outlet, feed the wires up the A pillar and over to the mirror. Look for threads installing radar detectors. There was one talking about that the other day. I think he was pulling from the ashtray, but same idea. They were suggesting it's a pretty easy job!

Power from the glove box is quite easy. Only need to pull under dash cover. However getting the tap ( use the crimp on type) onto the wire needs small hands. No need to disassemble anything else up the pillar or under the roof liner. Use a plastic putty knife to push the wire under the cover and liner.

Gracias, for all the info. I spoke with one of the service "guys" at MB today about installing an OEM Mercedes-Benz auto-dim mirror assembly (which I had seen on eBay). He told me that if your vehicle did not come with Premium Pkg 1 then the wiring harness would not be available in the upper console. But I figure with the Gentex model w/homelink, all that harness wiring would not be required. I will talk with Gentex again on the phone and find out for sure.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

I searched on the forums and found that it was a direct plug and play something about the upper console being the same across all the lines

I bought an used mirror with homelink on ebay for 50 bucks.
it came off a C class and the install took no more than 10 minutes. (after 30 minutes of watching youtube instruction videos)

Do you still have links to those Youtube instruction videos? I'm in the process of looking for spare parts as well!
