Chip tuning?

Hi guys,

I've noticed ebay (and google) have LOTS of different external chip tuning devices claiming to over power the GLK tdi engine from 170 hp to 212 (some even 231) hp.

Obviously, they'd claim better fuel economy (which imho is irrelevant, cause they probably only make highway economy better but they degrade in city economy)..

This sounds promising, however its also obvious this voids your warranty.

I wanted to know if anyone here has any experience with these sort of chips, and how dangerous or problematic these may become?

Do they squeeze more juice out of the engine by stressing it too much, causing problems?

Additionally, could these be disengaged right before service?

And then I'd ask the same thing - Would ECU flashing make drastic changes that may result in negative effects on the car? (Gear / engine) etc...

there are cons and pros for tuning box vs ecu remap:

Read this short article: http://www.endtuning.com/dieseltuningboxes.html

Personally I prefer ecu remapping over tuning box.

Ecu remapping = real values
Tuning box = fake values virtually

it is up for you.

Chips will void your warranty and tuning boxes in my estimation are a hoax based on their claims. Not that they don't work they just don't get you the HP or torque they claim. Waste of time and $$$

And the ecu remapping? according to the above link its superior and better... but do they also void warranty?

Can anyone detect a remap?

I think that in my old audi they said that using the cruise control stick I could switch between ECU programs but I haven't really got into that.

[EDIT: Chip = remapping I reckon? so that answers the warranty question. Anything to do about this?]
