GLK250BT DEF (ADBLUE) Refill DIY

I refilled mine @ 8K miles. It took 3 gallons. Your tank holds over 7 gallons. You probably wouldn't need more than 2 gallons now. I wouldn't worry about it. Do it when you return from your trip.

Did you get a message that you needed to refill, or did you just do so as a matter of routine maintenance? Did you need only 1 2.5 gal. container at 6700 miles, or did you need both? I'm at 6400 miles, about to go on a 1000 mile trip, and don't want to get caught short.

I am just adding DEF as I go after each 1500-2000 miles regardless. It takes a few minutes with my MB bottle and fluid from Walmart. Very simple...

Great instructions, just did the fill up. Most of the effort was removing the trunk liner, twisting and pulling. Instead of cutting the bottom of the kruse bottle, the cap can twist off but is blocked by some bumps. I cut several 1/4 inch vertical lines at the base of the cap so there is no resistance when twisting the cap off.
Not one drop of mess anywhere, but have to refill the bottle several times.

2016 Golf R, 2014 GLK
I just filled up our '14 GLK last night. I picked up two of these from Canadian Tire: http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/ai...-0380769p.html
They came with their own filler nozzles. I decided to give it a go and see if I could skip the adblue bottle. A few notes:
-I didn't need to remove any nuts or bolts as per instructions. The felted plastic liner just popped out and I was good to go.
-The generic filler neck was perfect - it fit in the tank opening
-Doing it this way I did get a little bit of fluid leakage - just a very minor amount, but I had shop towels in the spare tire area just in case.
As an aside, our GLK took about 19 litres of DEF - 16,000 km. This is approx. equal to 5 gallons / 10,000 miles.

shelf life and date code
It is my understanding that the shelf life of DEF (Adblue) under proper storage conditions (around 70F and out of the sun) is two years.
Also all containers are required to have a date code that can be deciphered based on the below example found on another site.
<quote>
The date code on the BlueDEF box in my picture is
GA153590089
Lets break this down into 4 groups of numbers:
GA: The designator of the plant that manufactured the DEF
15: The year of manufacture plus 1, so this DEF was made in 2014
359: 365-359 = 6, so the 6th day of the year, or January 6th.
0089: The batch code.
</quote>
Don't confuse the date code with the bar code as I have seen some others do on other forums.
Since the shelf life is two years and we seem to go through about five gallons every ten thousand miles it does seem wise to fill at the ten thousand mile mark in order to ensure that the DEF in the tank stays relatively fresh. That is assuming that you buy the freshest DEF that you can find and dilute five gallons into the approximately two gallons remaining in the tank.
I suppose you could even go a bit longer, say twelve thousand before filling, to ensure that you have even less old DEF in the tank to dilute with the new. However, I will stick with the recommended ten thousand miles.
I don't think it wise to fill more often than ten thousand given that it means that the average age of the DEF in the tank gets older and older as time goes on. And even at ten thousand you should still have around two gallons in the tanks and therefore in no danger of running out.

I recently got two 2.5 gallon jugs of Peak BlueDEF for about $15 each.

I think 5 gal seems reasonable. I am about to do my 20k service which I filled it to the top at 10k. i recommend getting the PEAK 2.5 gallon boxes and doing it yourself.

DEF Pumps at Truck Stops
As a possible alternative – Go to a fueling station for big trucks/rigs. Most have DEF pumps at the diesel pumps for a lot less than even the 2 ½ gallon box that can be purchased at most automotive stores. The turnover rate of their DEF fluid tanks, should not have a shelf life issue to worry about either.
I done this twice now, last time, at my 20k refill, I went to a local Love’s truck stop. Pulled up to the rig’s diesel pumps, went in to the cashier, got a special nozzle adapter that fits the larger DEF pump nozzle. 3.3 gallons later, returned the adapter (free use) for less than $10, , my E250 DEF tank was filled up. Got to admit, my little E250 was somewhat strange and humorous to see in line with a dozen fuel islands with those BIG rigs filling up

I used to have a 3/4 ton truck with a 28' trailer and I used to feel strange with that going to the large truck pumps. The GLK 250 is even much smaller than that.

I stopped for fuel at a station that only had diesel at the truck line up and noticed the DEF pumps there. I couldn't see a way to fill without spilling and never gave it another thought. I will now.

PSA: IDParts Shipping old Adblue Stock. Beware!
Just getting ready to perform an oil change and DEF refill @ the 8000 miles mark.
Ordered the oil change kit and half gallon bottle of AdBlue from IDPart.
The Adblue that was shipped has production date of 13/10/08. Called up IDParts and they claim that they purchase it wholesale from VW and AdBlue has 2years shelve life, thus there was no problem. IDParts will issue an RMA but the cost of shipping it back to them will be my responsibility.
This is the first time that I've shopped with IDparts and the experience had been very disappointing.
I'll probably toss the content of the bottle out and use it as an expensive funnel.
end of rant ;-)

I was surprized to read of your disappointment with idparts. I have been using them since I purchased my golf tdi in 05 and used them for nearly every need for it, as well as my Toureg V10tdi and now my GLK. Have always been professional and prompt. I suppose there will be some bad experiences as their client base expands. Not excusing it though.
