GLK250BT DEF (ADBLUE) Refill DIY
Hey all. I just completed my 10K DEF refill/top-up on my 2014 GLK250BT. Thought I'd provide the details so others can do it themselves too.
It's harder than filling your windshield washer fluid, but a little easier than an oil change, IMO. No special tools are required, unless you count the one-time purchase of a bottle of ADBLUE with the special fitting that connects to the GLK fill port. Total cost was $45 this time, and will be less than $30 from now on.
I wrote a step-by-step guide with pics and attached it to this post.
Thanks,
Jeff

very helpful. In your opinion, If I purchased a garden spray handpump such as:
you can remove the long nozzel and just use it as a hose. Do you think this would make it easier, just control the flow with the handle on the hose. It would be just like filling gas.

Actually, I am sure it would work and the price is right. Hardest thing might be to see when to stop filling, but you do have the nozzle to control flow.
Using the OE bottle as a funnel with built in shutoff, is however also not a bad deal seeing you get a 1/2 gal DEF thrown in and something made for the job.
PS: I have two of those $10 sprayers for car work. One for brakes/injectors, one as just a water spray.

I just added about a gallon and a half of DEF after 3000 miles. Gumout brand 2.5gal
container has a spigot and a snap on hose. Real easy to fill. Don't worry about over
filling and spilling, excess drains out underneath the car. After replacing the small cap
I poured a cup of water on the overflow to flush it out the hole. Biggest problem is
getting the tool tray fitted properly in place. I got the DEF at Advance Auto for $13.00

Just as an FYI - the 1/2 gallon bottle ADBLUE with the special spout can be purchased at any local VW dealer at a lower cost than what MB will most likely charge you. I got mine for around $8 + tax (MA).

GLK250BT DEF (ADBLUE) Refill DIY Update
Just a quick update to my original DIY: I just did the 20K top up, and it took about 3.5 gallons.
A key thing I learned on this second top-up is that you don't even need the bottle with the special fitting on it. The nozzle that comes with and screws-on 2 1/2 gallon Peak Blue Def from the auto parts store works fine.
It's a little tricky to rotate the big container around so that it reaches the fill port, but it can be done. I spilled a little, but chased it with some water after putting the inner cap on. It runs out of the bottom of the vehicle through a hole that seems to be designed for that purpose.
Best regards,
Jeff

My Service A is coming up and I'd like to do this ahead of the service. Does anyone know roughly how much this would take off the Service A bill at 10,000 miles? Just looking for a ballpark number.
Also, any issues with the dealer acknowledging and removing this from this Service bill?
Thanks

I picked up one of those Special Bottle via a VW Dealer in MA ( as suggested by another user here for 8$ with tax) and also bought that Peak - bigger one via Auto Zone ( was on special for 8.50)
So am ready for my TOP UP in the GLK ...........so Than will also use it on the Audi q7 Tdi we got .
I did look @ that PeakAD BLUE box and saw that filler nozzle so was going to post here and ask you - thanks for saving me that
Thanks again for the excellent Write-Up.
Cheers

I've read Adblue/DEF has a 2 year shelf life. Does the 1/2 gallon bottle and the large refills sold in stores have an expiration date stamped on them?
just looking at a thread where someone put in expired adblue

The big one 2.5 gallon from Walmart has also the date, but not readable on my particular refill container.

Thanks, I guess cars which are driven less than 5k a year will probably need a flush if the expiration really does cause bad issues

Has anyone just used normal funnel instead of bottle with special spout or nozzle? If you purchase small funnel, it should fit and go inside the filling hole? Or am I missing something? Then just pour AdBlue in..

Only problem would be overfilling and spilling into the car. Why not buy ONE bottle of the recommended MB fluid (or similar,) and cut the bottom out after using the fluid, then using it as a funnel/filler? That's what I did.
#22
Yea, thanks for clarification. That is true, that it is not a big deal to purchase one bottle.
I was just curious, that nothing prevents for using normal funnel (e.g. there is no locking mechanism/cap on the filling hole, which only works with proper nozzle or spout when you push it down).
That screw mechanism with the bottle of course prevents spilling but does it also prevent overfilling (is there a backlash valve/lock)?

I just refilled mine for the first time at 6700 miles. I picked up two jugs of 2.5 gal Peak DEF. These have the attachable flexible spout.
This was quite simple. Just screw on the spout and the end fits into the filler hole. Dumped the 2.5 gals in while watching the level with an LED pen flashlight. 2.5 gal pretty much filled it up. Spent about 10 min doing it total.
