Here in (brutally hot) Arizona, batteries tend to die at around three years of service. Personally, I've always been able to stay away from the tow truck by listening to the sound of the starter motor. When a battery really IS getting long in the tooth, you'll hear a slight delay between the starter engaging and the start of the engine turning. Kind of like an old guy getting out of a recliner... When that happens (the car, not me...) I know it's time for a new battery. And of course, I do have to continuous voltage monitoring via the little dongle I posted in video form above. If the voltage starts looking suspect (and by that, I don't mean 12.0 volts...) I can be even more proactive.

I’ve been dealing with a .02 - .05 v drain overnight for a long time . Finally decided to look into it. First thing I did is take an IR thermometer to my bought accessories. The first thing I tried was the Dash cam . After sitting all night my camera was 61f in a 40 degree garage . I unplugged it and no more parasite . Just an hour ago I find my mechanic wired it backwards !

I agree, but that whole thesis let me down a few years back. Coldest night of the year. The car cranked through three complete cycles and sounded just fine, but apparently (hind sight) there wasn't enough voltage to enable the (Diesel) injection system. I was skeptical that it was just a battery problem, and made plans to get it into the garage while waiting for AAA to show up. He had a portable jump pack and it fired off immediately. The weather warmed up and I replaced the battery. No problems since then (2 years and many colder nights later).
