14 GLK 250 BT
Perhaps then it needs to be said that diesels (specifically MB GLK 250 BT) once one knows how to achieve results has a WIDER RANGE of MPG than say the MB GLK 350 (gasser, I do not know what is happens to be.)

Well, I just completed a trip from Ontario, Canada to SC - about 1000 miles. We drove at the most 10% over posted speed limit on I-81 (55-70). GLK250 was full, but not heavy stuff and there was just the two of us. We has Thule box on top, but fuel consumption was about same as for same trip last year without box. 27-28 mpg on car computer and by calculation. Car has done about 7800 miles.

During summer, our mileage was at best 35mpg.

So how do others get 40+ mpg with same vehicle? I can't see any way of achieving that regardless of how we drive. Our V-6 E320 gasser did just as well.
Your now driving a brick

Some question the way we drive. On a trip like the one described in post #1, it is hard to imagine many driving more conservatively. We have GLK on cruise control and maintain speed of other traffic, which is usually about 10% over the posted speed limit. The section from Canadian border South to Virginia is quite hilly. We did see an improvement in mileage once through that, but still we couldn't get better than about 29 mpg.

On trips from our home in Kingston to Toronto Ontario, we achieved 35 mpg at about 120km/hr or 74mph. But that is in summer with no roof box or bikes on hitch mount. Also less load by about 200 lbs.

I still just can't see how those higher figures could be achieved on my car. There must be a difference in settings or in the energy content of the fuel.

With the higher cost of diesel vs reg gas, a Subaru Outback or similar gasser might have better economy.
My ML BT does better most of the time at 127 KM/hr too slow works against gearing and terrain. Alternately about 105 or less is good but not below 90km also in town about 60kmplus or the gear choice eats fuel at 50klm/30mph it I use distronic fuel usage is up because of traffic... just my results

One of the trips had stop and go traffic all the way up to Tahoe, but both trips were fairly free flowing traffic on the way back. They both include all street driving in and around Tahoe for three days each and an average of two "pitstops" for food and restroom breaks each way. The trip computer Usually reports a little higher than the actual calculated numbers on Fuelly.
After a couple of weeks of local driving in SC, I am getting almost the same mileage as twinturba above. About 32mpg with 30/70 city/hwy. Hwy actually relatively flat city bypasses we use a lot. Speed about 60-65mph. This seems fine and in line with epa numbers.

I have tried driving very conservatively on several trips and can't for the life of me see how I could ever get 40mpg or more as some have posted. Maybe only if it was downhill all the way

I wouldn't have thought so either but being forced to drive 50 mph while using an inflatable spare, I got near 48 mpg on the GLK250 across the state of Wyoming.

In virtually all 'local' conditions, which includes limited freeway, lots of curvy mountain roads and relatively short 'trips', I get 32 mph. Highway at speeds under 90 mph I consistently get just under 36 mpg.

I read most of the posts here and scanned other posts regarding mileage. I am somewhat amazed that the mileage numbers many of you are achieving seem to disappoint or at least underwhelm. The numbers I seem to consistently get are very close to what I see being posted here. I am quite amazed and pleased with my 34-39MPG. I have a vehicle with room for five, a relatively large cargo area, secure 4matic drive train (when considering the amount of rain here) in a German made UV that costs little more than a loaded KIA or Ford. The dealership I bought from has also amazed me with their level of customer service. As quality rides go, I would find it difficult to find an equal. I looked at Audi TDI as well as the BMW oil burner, and dollar for dollar, the MB came out ahead (at least for my needs). Having also owned a V10 Toureg (Talk about a beast) a Golf tdi (going strong at 216000 miles) I have seen the performance side and the economy side of diesel ownership. This GLK250 is the best of both worlds.

Another thing that folks need to be aware of is that refineries change to a winter diesel formula. This formula has a lower cetane level because of the addition of #1 fuel to the #2 summer fuel to prevent gelling and will normally result in a bit lower fuel economy.
