Robbed by Stealership for new thermostat on 2011
Ok call me an idiot. 2011 GLK CEL came on. Hand dandy tester showed low engine temp. Thermostat not closing right? Out of warranty but I took it to the dealer. Can't be that expensive right? Quoted $230 for new thermostat, $14 for the gasket and $25 for antifreeze, diagnostics and labor total $650. WTF? I looked online and the thermostat is a complete housing with sensor so I can see it being more than a Ford or Chevy basic thermostat. Found aftermarket thermostat in the $75 range. OEM from MBpartsdirect.com for $122, gasket $4.50. I'm sure they would use the original antifreeze.
They also wanted to flush the brake lines and change 2 filters. All toll for $1200.
I had them do the thermostat only because I just didn't have time to do it myself but will be looking for a good indie mechanic. Anyone have any good ones in Louisville, KY?
thanks and happy motoring
