‘Love/Hate’

I’m looking to buy a GLK, so I’m wanting to know all the ‘Love/Hate’ things about owning a GLK…

I hated the stock stereo, I replaced it, nothing to hate now.

Hate that all Mercedes motors mount units wear at around the 50k mark, love it when the motor mounts are new. Hate that the transmission does not hav a fill tube , dip stick, and drain plug, this would drop the cost of transmission service substantially.

Hate the MB Tex seats, for a car that cost this much leather seats should be standard and full leather trim as an option.

What do you mean that MB motors wear at 50000? Wear out? Wear more than others? They wouldn't pass pollution tests here if they were worn out. So how long do these motors last?

I'm sure the motor mounts aren't covered under warranty by that time are they? So how much does it cost to have them replaced (ballpark) and for the transmission are they known for having any troubles?

I had an Audison ap8.9 bit (amp preamp) and their optical converter a Bit Dmi, linking head unit by optics. A Bit drc controller. Hertz component speakers, maybe the 6.5xl. If you just do speakers you need to pick the most efficient since the stock head unit is maybe 3 ohm. And a JL powered sub in back. In Chicago I know one of the best installers and they are very very reasonable in price.

My car is not under warranty so it was out of pocket.
The motor mounts (x2) and transmission mount made by Lemforder (OEM manufacturer) was around $200 for th set, labor is the big cost and I got quote anywhere from $400-$750. My GLK showed signs of bad mounts at 62k in retrospect, the dealer was pointing at one her issues but in ththe end it was ended up being the mounts, sadly it took until 73k to get it done while we were chasing other things. My previous 2006 E500 had the mounts changed at 50k under the extended warranty and then again at 110k when I sold it, the good thing was he E500 labor cost half because it was much easier.

First I tried setting the hidden Eq in the Maintenance manual, I cut the mid and boosted bass and treble. That helped a bit but not enough, the speakers I didn't like so I replaced them and tried that for awhile till I put in the new amp and sub. Now it sounds very good, but I wish I opted for a better Audison amp, not meaning this sounds poor, but the high frequencies are not fully reproduced with D class circuitry. But that upgrade by itself would be near 2000$

So am i to understand these motor mounts are a on going issue with GLK and E class, are there others that have this problem?

I believe it is the type of motor mounts in general, my previous 2008 acura TL had the hydraulic mounts go out at 80k. Hydraulic mounts are smoother than your typical full rubber mounts buy wear out quicker. Easy way to test your mount is to open the hood, start the car and have someone sit in the driver seat, press the brakes all the way down and blip the throttle, if your mounts are bad then you will see the motor jump, small movements are normal but mine was literally trying to jump out.

I love the ride, handling, etc.


Hate the stock stereo, even the upgraded one that we have, that the running boards rust so easy up here in MA (had a set replaced under warranty already on a 2014), that it has the 3-4 shift 'thud' that isn't solvable, and that the trunk is useless in these cars, utterly useless, especially if you have a family.


That said, my wife loves it and doesn't care about any of this sh*t

I'm a big fan. I came from a big truck, so the ride is insanely better. I love the bluetooth, and how much the car just does on it's own without needing my input (can I adjust the brightness of the displays? No clue, but I've never actually needed to adjust them, it just does) I have enough room in the back to store my tool case, and my suitcase for my trips.

I hate that it's too tight for 4 adults to be very comfortable. I hate that it doesn't have a spare tire. I hate that my girlfriends Volvo has a strut to hold open the storage compartment in the trunk and I just have a cable with a hook.

And I really hate that it was replaced with a jelly bean. What the crap am I going to do when I wear this one out?

My 2013 came with a spare, air compressor-pump and jack, the MB mini spare should fit in the trunk.

With a diesel, the AdBlue tank eats up all the space needed for the spare. I did buy a Vredestein Spacemaster though, and I bring it along for long trips (being short, my seat is set forward enough that I can put the Vredestein on the floor behind my seat). Otherwise, you can indeed put it in the trunk, but it eats up valuable space.

Hugo beat me to it. My diesel doesn't have the spare. I did go buy a fullsize wheel/tire about a week after I bought the car, but it took up way too much space for trying to work out of the trunk. I finally gambled with the logic of "I've driven 60k a year for 13 years, and never had a flat".

Love/hate

I love driving my GLK 2014. I love the pep of the twin turbo, the smooth ride, the diesel mileage. I bought snow tires and rims for under $1800.00. Excellent traction. Not crazy about the cost of servicing at dealership. Will get extended warranty for under $3000.00. Charging me over $300.00 to check the car before extended warranty is a ripoff.

I love the bragging rights of saying that I have 200 hp and 369 lb-ft for torque out of a 2.1 4-cyl engine. I hate that I don't feel much, if any, of that power.
