Adding Heated Seats
Anyone done the heated aftermarket seats install on their own? Local shop wants $800 to do both seats. I'm thinking I may try this on my own.

No, this is aftermarket stuff installed. I can buy the kits for both seats for under $300. I'm cheap so I may attempt this myself. If it was true Mercedes stuff for $800 I would be all over that.

I figure that you will have completed the job correctly when we have the next full eclipse---don't forget to post the DIY, the one before and after the fire!!

Thanks for the encouragement. I can wire anything. Telephone man for 37 years and self proclaimed electrician. The wiring is the easy part for me. Removing the seats and covering has me somewhat hesitant.

are you going use the original buttons to turn on the heated seats (on the dash). Would this mean someone can do ventilated seats as well? its hot in california.

So I have found a couple of places in KC that will do the heated seats. 1 place is $300 and the other is $350. However, both are saying there is a passenger air bag sensor in the seat cushion on the passenger seat that will not allow installation of the heater on the bottom cushion, only the rear. So those prices are just for the drivers seat.

I think actively ventilated seats would be a much different project than adding heat. Different seat material, fans/ducting, etc...

Aftermarket seat kits...
Usually - when a dealer has aftermarket seat kits install (which is like $600 contractor cost) - the switch is added to the bottom side of the seat - like down by the lumbar control - but near the forward corner so you can easily reach - and no one goes back up into the dash to use factory switch opening.
Yes - there is a front passenger airbag sensor - I have seen installers (including our contractor) that can install bottom seat heater on passenger side as well and retain the airbag sensor function.
You can have rear seat's - outboard left and right) installed too if you like.
Personally - I'd rather use a experienced installer with that current - that DIY - expereince installer can get it done in 3-4hrs and for me it would be a 2-day job because I haven't done it before,

this is not a job for faint of heart.... I did this on two seats in my old truck. id never do it again. reinstalling the factory fake leather may result in screwing it up with wrinkles and or rips, pulls. you'll need compound cutters, hog rings and hog ring clamps. thats the easy part. getting the fabric to lay out perfectly is the hard part. installing the heat mats just needs to be uniform, slap button on side of seat, and add power via relay. it took a very long time, prob 8-12 hours to get it perfect.
if you got a quote for $800 id jump on it. the quotes i was getting were around $1500 for front two seats so i did DIY.
