glk airbag recall
Hello, just started looking into buying a used glk. Have noticed that every single one of them has an open recall for the airbag. looked into the airbag recall and am wondering if it is dangerous to drive the car?

Yes, there is a recall for the air bag.
Ive received a letter from MB Canada about a year ago for the 2010GLK, I am still waiting for the dealer to call me when the part is available.

Glk is part of the Takata airbag recall. I’m in Canada and got my letter a year ago too. They still don’t have the parts.

New year bump...
I just received a notice from my stealership that our GLK is affected.
GLK owners may want to be proactive and inquire at your local MB stealership if your VIN registers an active side airbag recall. Chances are, it will.

I got a letter on it about a year ago. Not high priority and bag still not available for mine. Most of the recalls were NOT high priority. I have no concerns and if I'm not called soon I'm alright with it.

Check the VIN online
There is a site you can go to where you input your VIN number and it can tell you if your airbags are okay or not. My 2015 GLK 350 doesn’t need to be replaced. If you call customer service they can also look this up for you using your VIN. If I find the link I will post it.

I received the notice long ago for my 2011 GLK and had been waiting patiently for the parts to be available and the go ahead from MBUSA.
Received the go ahead in January and promptly had the service done. Dealers are taking a day to do this work so expect to drop off your GLK if they
have sent you a go ahead notice. They seem to be staggering based on manufacture date so they are not inundated with recall work.

I received a notice that my 2015 passenger air bag is under recall. However they do not expect to have a replacement available until at least Q2 2020. So they want me to continue driving around for a year and a half with an airbag that could harm or kill my passenger? The notification doesn't mention anything about passenger safety, it just says their is a recall on the airbag.
It seems unreasonable that they can notify me about a safety recall that could cause serious injury and have a year and a half to resolve the issue. Even if there is not a takata replacement immediately available there should be an alternative and it should be a priority to get it out.

If I recall correctly, the parts that fail do so by corroding over time, so they are probably still serviceable. There is apparently an insufficient number of replacement parts so they prioritize by vehicle age and the climate the vehicle resides (hot humid areas get priority).

Inquiry at last service a while back responded that the queue put me about next December, 2019. I have no concerns.

The new notice mentions both front air bags. I guess I'll get it done.
P.S. We still get notices for our Pontiac Vibe which we sold at least 5 years ago.

Seems to be a fractured recall. As I read thru the thread, it is stated it's only for 2010-2012, then another post shows thru 2015. (it seems more prevalent for Canadian based vehicles, for whatever reason).
Pretty sure I checked on recalls a while (years?) back, but I did go to the NHTSA site yesterday, plugged in our VIN - no pending recalls. So our 2014 GLK Base (USA) might not have Takata bags.

Mine's due as well (2011) but I'm not too worried as the problem seems to come as a result of corrosion, and the car has been a "desert car" its whole life. IIRC, when the whole Takata fiasco was starting, they were going to recall only those in wet, humid areas - but I can see how that could be unmanageable.

Mine is a 2014 350 USA model and I have received "tons" of recall notices for the airbag. Can't see any chance of the vehicle being a base model, or not, determining what type or brand of airbag was installed.

Did you buy yours new? I ordered mine/bought it new. If you didn't, maybe they didn't have a good mailing address for you in order to send the recall notice.
