I have a 2013 E class with a similar warning message. I finally realized that you can't just let the hood drop or push from a foot above closure but instead let it drop from about 3 feet above the closure point with a good slam!

Another thing you could look at before replacing the hood sensor is adjusting the latches that go into the hood sensor. Mine take a 13mm wrench to adjust. You could adjust them to stick down into the latch sensor further (one to two threads) that should help the message go away.
