229.52 Oil
We've recently acquired a 2015 GLK 250. Dealership said they serviced it before we got it but I wasn't absolutely sure they did. This past weekend I replaced the oil with Mobil 1 ESP 0-30. Did I make a mistake using the 0-30 instead of a 5-30? I had a hard time finding anything that met the specifications. We live in South Carolina. Any thoughts are appreciated.

0W-30 basically means that the oil is not too viscous when the temperature drops to below freezing during cold engine start. Both oil will provide the same level of protection when the engine is warm. We use 0W grade oils here in Canada since we have cold weather. It’s actually better and more expensive oil since it’s fully synthetic. Dino oil can’t be 0W graded. Only full synthetic can. There are also fully synthetic oils in other grades as well, but 0W is always fully synthetic. Some even argue that these oils are also
beneficial in hotter climates. You’ve definitely used the best oil you can in your car.

MB 229.52 Spec oil is easily found here in Canada. You can purchase Mobil 1 0W-30 and 0W-40 with 229.5 spec at your local Canadian tire. I buy the 4.4L jug when it’s on sale for $27 each. You can also buy Motul or liqui moly with the 229.52 spec at independent garages.
not all 0W-30 oil is the same despite it being fully synthetic. You must read the packaging to see if it has 229.52 spec listed on it. The reason is because the oil change interval for Mercedes is so long, up to 20,000 kms, it requires oil with low ash. The 229.52 spec oil is approved for low ash. Enabling longer oil change intervals and engine protection.
Whatever you do, make sure you do not listen to the mechanics or salespeople at Canadian tire. They don’t know anything. You must read the bottle yourself to find 229.52. Don’t trust the highschool dropouts!

I see that Canadian Tire now have euro oils that meet MB229.5 under their own brand (Motomaster?) Bought some of that on sale. Will probably trade GLK before next service, so likely now wont need 229.52 anyway. Good thing. I already have too much oil on my shelves!

Pennzoil makes a great oil that is 229.52 approved as well. It is called Platinum Euro LX and comes in 0w30 flavor.
Had I not bought the LubroMoly oil change kit from my preferred vendor, I'd have gotten the Pennzoil.

If it meets 229.52 spec and is on the approved list, I could care less what brand it is. Availability and price become the deciding factors for me.
Unless a company pays me to use their products; then things may change.

I decided to change oil & filter this weekend. Plan is still to trade the GLK, but that message saying I need a service in 15 days kept bugging me
I bought 7L of Mobil 1 ESP X1 0W30 at NAPA. Their site says it is C$9/liter. But when I went to shop they said it was $12.35/liter. When I questioned that, he said - How about $8.86/liter! (Invoice says Item is on sale) Anyway, cheaper than buying Penzoil at CT at C$56 for 5L (less when on sale) https://www.napacanada.com/en/p/ESS121218
Also bought NAPA DEF. $9.99 for 9.46L. I already had some. Took 11liters to fill after about 11,000km. I used the tip I read here about cutting off the bottom of the MB bottle (that I had in car)
Mann Filter coming tomorrow.
