2011 GLK350 - couple issues: Rear lift gate auto close, and HIDs (aftermarket)
Good morning/afternoon.
I have a 2011 GLK350 with standard halogen headlights. I installed a set of HIDs and the issue is they come on, then after about 30 secs, they turn off.. They'll remain off for about 10sec, then turn back on. This cycle continues.
The bulbs (H7) are new, and the ballasts are a few years old (removed them from my 2005 Jetta GLi). Xentec 55w, I believe, is the ballast. They worked flawlessly in the Jetta.
Q: Any ideas as to why this is occurring? I'm going to remove the H7 and temporarily install the H1 (Jetta) bulb to ensure it isn't the new H7 bulbs, but I'm thinking it's something related to the way the GLK is "seeing" the ballasts. I do not believe they are Canbus, but there's no error msg on the speedo display.
The other issue I have is with the auto-closing (latch portion) of the rear lift-gate. It opens/closes fine, but the last "latch-pull" portion of the operation is hit or miss; mostly miss..
It will sometimes complete the latching but not very often. I've had the latching motor/cable out to check it and all seemed fine/normal. Reinstalling it made the latching work properly for about 1-2wks straight, then it started being wonky again.
Q: Is this a common issue? What is the usual remedy, if there is one?

Thank you; that's what I was kinda thinking this morning. I did a quick little test a few minutes ago. Disconnected the OE headlight plug fromt he ballast, and connected ballast direct to battery. 5 minutes and no flicker/cycle of power, so I figured it was something the car was doing.. I'll have to research/order a new kit, I suppose, because wife really misses her HIDs (had a 2014 VW CC R-Line before we got the benz.)

Something I forgot to mention, mb ballasts from factory installs are mounted way low in the fender, that’s to keep them cool, I saw mine is rated to 105c , about 220f, the engine compartment in summer when you turn off the motor easily exceeds that, my aftermarket Philips fail, until cooled, because they were installed just under the hood. Also aim your fixture all the way down , you have plenty of light and reduce blinding people . Look into Philips hid

Thanks, looks like good options. For the Morimoto, the wording is unclear - when it says " The optional Standalone Canbus harness substitute is recommended for European vehicles that display "bulb out" error messsages", does that mean the harness is optional and needs to be purchased separately, or does the kit already include this harness?

thanks, I checked them out. Gonna determine if I want to invest.. The GLK sees very little road time during dark hours, so I'm debating on the additional investment. I probably will go for it, though, because.. Vision

Unfortunately not on HIDs. We're direct distributors for Morimoto and contractually obligated to sell at that price. As you can see here, we already price at under list:

I think I paid a lot less than 260, I think I paid around 160, search the site and see, look at reviews to see if reliability is a problem, be sure to mount them low away from engine heat!

The non-Philips kits are about $160 - http://www.philipshidkits.com/35w-h7...onversion-kit/

The retrofit source has a black Friday sale all weekend. And they are a morimoto distributer. I have bought a ton of stuff from them with no problems. Plus you will get the discount this weekend.
