2010 GLK350 power tailgate issue

just bought a 2010 GLK350 from a car broker. turns out, like a few people, that the power tailgate does not really work. I can get it to work only if I use the rear latch and then give it a helping hand up about a quarter of the way. probably needs a new motor?

I've noticed that there were maybe some of these vehicles without a power tailgate? just with a manual one? anyone ever hear of a conversion from power to manual? I'd be fine with a manual tailgate as one less thing to break down and manually operating the power tailgate is kinda like manually operating assisted steering when that's not working... difficult!

thanks for your input!

I would go for a new struts at first, I have the same problem, but what is interesting, during the summer I don't have this problem at all, but when the temperature goes down, power tailgate needs some help to open...

wow that's interesting... is it possible the strut is just too stiff? if its a gas strut then it could very well be stiffer in cold weather (its cold here right now). maybe I should disconnect the strut to see what happens...

the hatch release button on the door does absolutely nothing that I can determine.

Had this problem back when it was still under warranty. Trunk would only open a few inches on its own. Dealership replaced one of the struts which solved the issue and it has't happened in the 5 years since.

this is all awesome advice! I removed one strut and the tailgate suddenly operated flawlessly from the key (ok I think there must be a separate issue with the door button). the tailgate just wouldn't stay open unless I supported it after the motor shut off and dropped it a bit at the top but then stayed up. so there seems to be a possible fix with attending to the struts.

one last piece of advice desired... the strut I removed I can't seem to get on again. should I be able to compress it by hand at all? it appears fully extended and won't fit on as the tailgate won't lift far enough on the hinges. another indication that this strut has failed if I can't compress it by hand or should it be very hard to compress?

anyone know of a suitable aftermarket retailer for these struts?

thanks again for everybody's input!
