GLK 250 Service Interval

I'm curious to know if everyone is following the service reminder or changing engine oil at some other interval. My local mechanic suggested 5K intervals but freely admitted it wasn't a necessity. I have a sample heading to Blackstone for an analysis. We went the full 10K on the first run. Current mileage is 72K.

Thanks

If using the correct spec oils (229.51 or the newer 229.52), the 10K mile OCI is conservative. Your local mechanic would certainly benefit from 5K OCIs...

FWIW, I've stretched OCIs out to 12k-13k miles many times in the past. Currently at 101xxx miles and the engine runs beautifully, returns excellent fuel economy, always looks pristine under the oil cap, and doesn't need more than 0.5L topped off between changes.

Your mileage may vary, yada yada yada. All the best!

Thanks for your input. I'll share the report when I receive it. I personally didn't think it was necessary however I wanted feedback.

Have a great day!

Looking forward to your UOA report. I did several back in the day on my VW TDI. The comments were always positive, advising that I push the oil longer (which I did).

Here's the report. 10K seems perfectly fine to me. I don't know how to attach a pdf so sorry for the screen shot.

Good looking UOA. If you want to get a reliable trend, do 3 UOAs using the same oil and see how the wear metals average. Then you’ll have a good idea how this particular oil is working in your OM651 engine.

Of course, UOAs cost money. Might as well just do an oil change for the money

Point is, 10k miles is no biggie on modern diesel oils. Just keep the sump full and drive more worry less

Just because you show no metal in your report doesn’t mean the oil is still 100% good. The additives packages wear out, viscosity enhancers , anti sludge, anti wear. I notice a power boost changing oil at 4000m. As advanced as the oil is I’d say change it way before 10000m. Basically when it’s black and stinks it’s old.

All those items of concern did not escape Blackstone's notice and had anything been found, they'd have said as much. I don't think they implied the oil is still 100%, just that it's doing a good job at this interval and doesn't absolutely require changing just yet.

With respect to the "when it's black and stinks it's old" comment: nonsense. Even brand new engine oil will look pitch black within hours when run in a diesel engine. This is because diesel-rated oil is designed to hold soot in suspension, as soot is an abrasive byproduct of diesel combustion. If you're seeing golden oil in a diesel engine, be afraid!

Also: noticing a power boost after an oil change is anecdotal at best, hardly a reason to cut the manufacturer's OCI in half. Feel free to change the oil as often as you'd like, it's your time and money. I've learned to go by the book on maintenance items like this, and so far it hasn't resulted in the demise of any of my previous 6 diesels (VWs and MBs). Your mileage may vary
