Comment on dealerships
Recently found this guy on the web. He's the owner of a pretty large indy shop that specializes in high-end cars including MB, Jags, Astons, Ferraris etc. This vid shows him doing an oil change on his wife's ML. He has some very interesting things to say about dealerships, not very complimentary. Just another reason to DIY or find a trustworthy indy and stay well away from or be very wary of dealerships.

So, maybe someone can explain how all independents are nothing but sweetness and light and all dealers are the Devil themselves? Could this video be a little self serving?

Once I had my local shop change my oil, I checked the oil while I was there after the job was done and paid for, and it was still dirty, I questioned the owner and he just opened his register and handed me my money back.
A point he is making is to get a second opinion for any big scare repair. But yes he is pitching himself, and crooks are everywhere. I buy my own oil and filter and pay 35$ for an oil change. Dealers do screw you on price.

this guy is pretty reputable. he is the mechanic for Tyler Hoovies garage on youtube. And he does all the work on car trek and another show i cant remember the name of.

It appears that no one is infallible. This mistake by your famous, independent shop expert could have been very costly. BTW, who else likes to taste differential fluid? Smell it - maybe, but stick your finger in it and taste it? Yuck!

It seems to me self evident that there are good and bad dealerships and good and bad independants. I have experienced good and bad at both dealerships and independants. The best case for the average car owner is a close friend or family member who`s a mechanic or DIY. Even with a friend or family mechanic, don`t be surprised if they get it wrong. Just like you, they can goof too. Nobody`s perfect.
