2011 GLK 350 CEL Codes
I am in the process of looking at/buying a 2011 GLK 350 in Canada. Mileage is not too bad at 170 000 km and price is competitive. It's a private sale and I test drove it and I am quite impressed. I noticed the CEL was on and asked the owner if they knew about it. It's been a while since they drove it as they purchased something new and its been sitting - so she was unaware.
I hooked up my OBD reader to it and it threw quite a few codes.
P0017 Powertrain
P0016 Powertrain - Crank-Cam position correlation
P0128 Powertrain - Coolant Thermostat below thermostat regulating temp
P1200 Powertrain
P1208 Powertrain
P1315 Powertrain
When test driving the car, it seemed to run fine - no misfires or hesitation. Honestly the only thing I noticed was the heat was not throwing very much hot air when turned to the max (which may be the cause of the P0128 code - open thermostat or bad thermostat).
Question is, any one out there that can help me figure out if I should steer clear of this one or is this common and how much to fix - the seller said they are willing to negotiate on price. I really liked the car, but I'm not stuck on it - there are others.
Thanks in advance
Yeah, I did some digging around and found out you can check the engine serial number from the VIN (M272). Apparently serial numbers that meet the criteria have the sub-standard parts and are prone to failure.
As luck would have it, there's another one about 2 hours away - less km but a year older. I checked the VIN to get the engine serial number and this one is also a M272 engine, but the serial numbers are not within the failure prone numbers - so I am hoping that this won't be an issue - I mean it's mechanical and stuff breaks - but maybe this one might be a little less prone?
Thing I don't understand is that the 2010 has the higher serial number than the 2011 serial number. My only thought would be crated engines in the manufacturing plants and the 2011 got an older crated engine than the 2010.
I dunno - lol. I'm just trying to make an informed buying choice - any thoughts?
The one you just saw seems to be neglected. I don't buy the excuse that they didn't notice it. I would take a hard pass and keep looking if I were you.

The one I was looking at was a 2011 but I didn't grab the VIN number, but the 2010 that is at a dealership provided the VIN, so I checked it against the information provided in that post and from what I could tell, the serial number on the engine met the criteria where it had newer parts.
