Misfire after manifold replacement

Title basically says it all.

I damaged 2 coil packs during removal, and replaced them with new one from MB.

The misfires are cyls 3 + 4. So basically opposite ends of the engine block. One of the new coils is on cylinder 4, the other on cylinder 2. I can swap those out, and check to see if the misfire moves, but the other packs are so brittle, if I try to separate them, I think they’ll just break like the others.

Any ideas?!

Maybe just replace all 4, and plugs if they’re original.

Then clear codes and see what’s what.

When you replaced the manifold, you had to replace or reinstall the gaskets between the manifold and the block. These oblong gaskets are critical and tricky to keep in place. You can loosen the manifold and lift it up slightly and peak underneath to check if any of the six gaskets is out of place. If the gasket was caught between the manifold and block, it can be cut. If that happened, you will want to replace the gasket. From memory, they were $11 each when I changed the spark plugs on my 2013 GLK350 several years ago.

Thank you for the tip about the gasket!

I pulled the fuel rail, and could see that the hole was blocked on cylinder 4.

cylinder 3 looked okay, but obviously I wrecked the gasket on install.

have replaced with another gasket, was very careful this time around, and so far so good!

photo attached so you can all laugh at my mistake with me.

That could've been much worse than a misfire. If that piece of gasket would've broken off, who knows what kind of damage it may have done to the valvetrain.

Glad you caught it and fixed it, and kudos to Dave for calling it right.

Yeah, that could have SUUUUUCKED!

Thankfully, it’s like a paper covered metal gasket, so it’s not really much of anything that can tear.

but lesson learned! I think I’ll stick to oil changes only.

Nah, we have an absolutely fantastic Mercedes indie shop here in Melbourne. The owner, Alex, has even walked my through doing other small, DIY projects myself.

What I spent on multiple gasket sets, and replacement bolt sets, my personal time, and being down for almost a week far exceeded what I’d have paid them to do it right the first time. I know when I’ve been beat.

"You pays your money and you takes your chances..."

Seriously though, it's good to know what things you should and should NOT tackle yourself. This is the best of both worlds: wrenching on the things you're comfortable on and getting more connected to the car, and knowing when to pay a pro to do the more complicated stuff once, and they do it right (in an ideal world).

I do 90% of all the maintenance on both vehicles; I pay someone else to bleed brakes and change transmission fluid. I don't like the stink, the potential mess and it's worth it for me. YMMV.

Either way, good to know you're back on the road
