Question Can I use the American engine oil?

Hello friends,

I have a 2014 GLK250 Bluetec in Canada, recently I need to do some oil change, and I found a website that told me Castrol EDGE 5W30 k or m is approved by the MB (although I don't know the meaning of k and m).

So yesterday I bought the Castrol EDGE 5W30 from Costco, and then I just found that it is kind of like an America Standard engine oil, so is there anyone knows that if I can use this oil? Thank you!

You need engine oil with MB approval 228.51, 229.31, 229.51
So short answer, no you shouldn't be using that engine oil as I don't see the approval.
As for engine filter just get it from a MB dealership.

Here are the approved brands and oils by MB based on the 228.51, 229.31 and 229.51 approvals

Looks like Castrol Edge is also approved by MB, however, that particular one you are holding isn't the right one. The engine oil has to have MB-Approval 229.51 and NOT just MB 229.51 (as an example) but the bottle of engine oil you are holding has neither.

By the way just to be extra clear: MB-Approval 229.5 is not the same as MB-Approval 229.51, your car doesn't take MB-Approval 229.5, you need MB-Approval 228.51, MB-Approval 229.31 or MB-Approval 229.51

I use Liqui moly in my car and I get it from FCPEuro but you could also buy from this site https://germanparts.ca/liqui-moly/

I heard that Germanparts.ca is good from my friends but I personally never tried them yet probably will next time I need to change my oil on my car. That being said you really don't have to get Liqui-Moly if you don't want to, it is also on the pricier side compared to other engine oil brands.

Return it and wait for the 40-60% off Canadian tire sale of Mobile1 ESP 5w30 4.4L Jug. That is your best option here in Canada. 31-34$ each. Need 1.5 of them. I usually buy 3 for 2 oil changes.

Yeah, most Diesel oils have some level of spark ignition rating, but most spark rated oils are not rated for compression ignition. That, and the new "clean" Diesels have elevated ratings to a whole new level.

The only reason an American oil wouldn't be suitable is maybe if your car only speaks French...

You need an oil specifically rated for MB spec 229.51 or 229.52. One American oil that meets the .51 spec and is reasonably priced is Pennzoil Euro L 5W-30.

Mobil 1 ESP meets all the relevant M-B specifications for Bluetec engines, and is often on sale here in the USA for $6.99/quart.

Where do you get it? I haven't even found anyone that carries the stuff. Then, again, I sort of stopped looking when I found the Pennzoil stuff at Wal*Mart for about $4.60/qt.

It looks like Wal-Mart may have mislabeled the Pennzoil Euro L. The Pennzoil Platinum Euro LX meets all the M-B diesel specs and is more expensive.
My local NAPA store made a similar mistake the last time I went in by selling me Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy instead of ESP (both have bottles with green labels and the same weights). NAPA runs specials on Mobil 1 every few months.

I have the bottle in hand. It says 229.51. I don't think that has anything to do with WalMart. From the Pennzoil web site:
"Mercedes-Benz 229.51 (L SAE 5W-30)"

FCP Euro claims you can warranty pretty much anything they sell as long as* you return the original product - including oil. I'm curious if anyone has tested that. Have you ever considered returning your used oil for a lifetime warranty replacement?

It is for real. You can drain the oil and send it back. You need to first purchase new oil, then return the old oil for credit. (Don't forget the filter, too!) You pay the shipping.

I personally would never take them up on this. It just doesn't seem right. And I'm part Scottish...

Yup, just like what John said, it is real, never actually did it personally, however.

I would do it in a heart beat if it was something that was defective, or that wore out quicker than I though it should, but not for consumables. Besides, no better way to make UPS hate you than to ship a bunch of dirty oil and have it leak...

They do include instructions for avoiding leaks but I get your point.
My thing is - since you need to order the replacement before you send back the old stuff, I might order replacement oil & filters if I'm ordering something else and need to order X dollars' worth of stuff to get free shipping.
