GLK350 - 20x8.5 +40 wheels?

Good morning MBWorld!

I've been hemming and hawing over what to do for spring for my GLK350 (2014). I put Blizzaks on the stock 19's and will be getting some new wheels for spring. I've been looking all over for either a pair of 19" wheels for spring I like, or debating on if I should upgrade to 20x8.5's (like the stock 20" option). I do have 2 Goodyear Weathergrip 19" tires with 10/32nds I'll re-use if I stick with 19s, so I'll only need to buy 2 new tires.

Now, I know that the stock wheels (20", but I believe the 19's too) have a +45 offset. I understand offset to some degree, but I guess as far as this goes, I'm a little unsure. I'm looking at the following wheels with a +40 offset, so this is 5 off from stock:

Enkei XM-6 20x8.5 5x112 +40 - https://www.fitmentindustries.com/bu...-xm-6-20x85-40

So: Would these adequately fit a GLK? The hub bore is large enough as well (as most aftermarket wheels are). I'm not sure how backspacing comes into play. Does anyone run these and have some pictures to share, or have some 40 offset wheels to share?

Alternatively, should I just stick with wheels with a +45 offset and call it a day? Obviously there's a ton out there, I just have to find a set I like. I know I could possibly do 5mm spacers, but I'm trying to avoid spacers. Thanks so much!

The offset of a wheel is the distance from its hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. If the offset is a positive number it means the centerline of the wheel will be inboard of the hub mounting flange. If it is negative the centerline of the wheel would be outboard of the mounting flange. Increasing the offset, or making it less negative, will move the wheel deeper into the wheel well. Decreasing offset or making it more negative will move the wheel out.

If you switch from a +45 to a +40 the centerline of the wheel will move outboard. Remember, if the wheel width is different things may not happen as you expect. For example, if you increase the width of the wheel 10mm and decrease the offset 5mm, the inner edge of the tire will be in the same place but the outer edge will be 10mm closer to (or past) the edge of the wheel well.

Confused? (I hope I'm not... )

It absolutely does help! Thank you so much! So in all reality, the likely they fit is very good, and given the width is the same as stock, it just means they might, or at least centerline, would be 5mm further out than the stock 20x8.5s. 5mm is a pretty small difference and might even mean they sit more flush! Either way this helps. I'll keep thinking about it!

Yes, it should be as if you put a 5mm spacer between the hub and wheel.

Now, if you're going up on the diameter, and using the same profile, the tire will be closer to the wheel well that way, too. Might want to look at the spacing between the tire and the outer lip of the inner fender just to be safe.
