There's the possibility of "Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)".
"it's a driver assistance system (ADAS) that recognizes and relays traffic sign information to drivers via the instrument panel, multimedia, or heads-up display.
In the United States, TSR systems can recognize speed limit signs, do not enter signs, and stop signs. Some can even detect yield signs, though it depends on the model. "
Above quoted from a 2021 article, so no doubt more improvements have happened.
I even read an official Mercedes website describing TSR and how it's available for some models. That page was about some Cxxxx model ... the TSR reader sensor is located on the front side of the rear view mirror assembly, obviously pointing out the windshield.

Yes, it's on page 45 of my Euro GLK booklet (facelift model). Some really NICE options that were never offered for the U.S. GLK models.

I remember coming across a photo of a W204 that had the posted speed limit shown right on the dash display, looked like it was on the facelift display. I know it wont do it on mine, a 2010 without built-in nav. I did a little more searching just know out of curiosity and theres info on how the cars camera reads the signs and thats how they get the info. Its MB Traffic Sign Assist.
With the garmin im not sure if it uses the camera to read the signs since all the other new Garmin Nav unit seem to show the posted speed limit and they dont have the built-in dash cam. Must be updated with the software, seems theres a new map update quite often. For a few months I remember the Garmin was still showing the old previous exit numbers on a highway they worked on, then after a map update the exit numbers were changed.

I was going to say, if the Garmin unit is actually taking video of the physical speed limit sign and showing the GPS speed (together) you should have no problem fighting a bogus speeding ticket. If it's just displaying the speed limit for that section from the Garmin DATABASE along with your GPS speed you're not going to have a good "fight." The driver alone is responsible for the speed being driven, not a Mercedes Benz database, a Garmin database or a camera that reads speed limit signs (they're not 100% accurate).
