Help! Repair Shop Broke my Rack and Pinion - Now making an odd noise
Hello,
I need all the help I can get, I am extremely frustrated at this point...
Took my 2014 GLK 350 4Matic to Les Scwab tire center last Wednesday to have my front lower control arms and bearings replaced. Upon pickup, Friday the 20th, wife went to turn on the car and "power steering malfunction" error occurred. Welp, they broke my rack and pinion according to them. So, they ordered a new rack and pinion and replaced it for me free of charge as well as giving my some money back on my original repair, I was livid. I picked up my fixed merc Saturday evening. Today (Sunday), upon making a U-turn there is a loud "rubbing" type sound accompanied with the floor board vibrating. So I tested it out a bit... turn the steering wheel full right/left when not moving there is no sound. When moving at any speed and turning the steering wheel full right/left there is a vibrating, rubbing, grinding type sound. Is this normal? It definitely did not do this with the old rack and pinion.

You didn’t happen to change tire or wheel size, did you? If it didn’t make noise or rub before, it shouldn’t make noise or rub now.

my advice as an owner of 4 independent BMW specialist garages would be not to drive it and call the garage that did the work and tell them that you won't put you or your family at risk because of an obvious fault with either the brakes steering or suspension which are considered a priority under BS5750 vehicle repair safety standards for the UK so I would imagine that a similar situation would exist for all reputable garages and insist that they recover the car and fix the issue that was not there before they had the car and they will be obliged to fix the issue free of charge and if they don't agree with you tell them that you are now going to call your lawyer for legal advice and they will be hearing from him if they have not collected the car and agreed to your terms. Any garage will know that they are better off fixing the issue than paying legal fees for a case they can't win

What does that mean? Turn the wheel to the lock and get out and feel around the tire with your hand, in side and out. Have someone listen as you move the car with the steering at full lock. Is the wheel centered when you drive straight? Do you have equal steering movement from center to full left and to full right?

Took it back today. They are saying they did not center it correctly (not 100% sure as I dont fully understand the rack and pinion in the first place). They are working to take it out and reinstall it correctly.
