Water pump help

Hey guys so recently got my sisters 2014 glk 250 (most nightmare car mechanically we’ve ever had in our lives) in a trusted shop to replace starter after it failed and Mercedes wanted $2500 to replace. They replaced the starter and noted a coolant leak and further diagnosed a water pump, another $1000 or so later and got the pump replaced. Car then sits for a few weeks only driven a day or 2 each week as we paid it off and are gonna sell it before it has anymore issues. Low and behold before we even get the chance,

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AGAIN. It’s never ending with this car, so it pulls P261F code , and they diagnose it needs a water pump vacuum solenoid, vacuum tank, vacuum switch for waste gate , etc.. another $1000 repair all within a few weeks of them doing the water pump. They claim that the old failed water pump (which never threw a code) contaminated the vacuum system and we are now gut punched into another $1000 repair right before we are going to sell (and lose thousands of dollars)

what’s your guys take? My first thought isn’t that they’re pulling one over on us and that we are just unlucky. But it seems strangely convenient that this happens right after they replace the water pump and it never had issues with that code before. Maybe tech messed something up? Or is this a common issue?

Never heard of the starter going bad on these. I have heard of the electronic steering column lock failing which renders the car unstartable, but that's a different issue.

Not knowing where you're located, the Bluetecs were part of an emissions fiasco settlement that included some new parts, new software and an extended warranty that covers a ton of stuff. I think the water pump and other related items are included.

Also, there was a recent recall issued specifically for the the water pump software. Has this recall been done? Has the emissions recall been done?

Not sure what MB dealer you're using but they should be aware of these recalls and the items that are included as covered under warranty. Also, whatever the dealer touched should be covered by a 1yr/12K mile labor warranty, so if they messed something up installing parts, it should be on them to rectify it.

There is a lot available to read on the recalls I mentioned, you should probably spend some time researching on this forum before you spend more money.

yes the starter went bad and needed replacing, and yes the water pump software was done along with all the emissions stuff and we got the diesel settlement and all that. Water pump was still diagnosed bad and replaced but now the vacuum stuff is bad. Done at independent shop because Mercedes rates are insane. Up to $300 an hour for diagnostic.

Here's a thread link that shows a full list of items covered under the extended AEM warranty: https://mbworld.org/forums/diesel-fo...-warranty.html

If the CEL is on for any reason, diagnosis of the cause should be covered and therefore free of charge. I would not be using a non-MB authorized shop, except if to replace/fix things that are not covered as above.

I suggest you make a stink at the MB dealership and include MB corporate if you need to. The loud wheel gets the grease.

if you look at the link you sent it doesn’t cover any diagnostic codes even if it’s related , but besides that the extended warranty does not cover the water pump, or the vacuum system related to it. All the diesel and emissions stuff was done already. Unless I’m not understanding, the water pump and that stuff shouldn’t not apply (the dealer already did the water pump software update and all that)

Yes the water pump contaminating the vacuum system is a common problem with this vehicle. You can check for coolant residue in the lines and the solenoid first to confirm. There is a water pump replacement video for this car on youtube that explains it. I posted about it recently because im looking for a small coolant leak myself.
