Liftgate struts stuck! Halfway Installed

Hi there. I was installing new lift gate struts on a MB GLK-350 (2015). I got both halfway on but the trunk door needed to be raised a bit to click on the bottom of the struts (probably a bad way to do it in the first place). I pushed the trunk door up slightly to attach when suddenly the door started closing. Now it is halfway open with the bottom of each strut sticking out. Don't laugh. Anytime I try to press the button on the remote, or on the trunk itself it only wants to close more or open slightly then try to close again. Any good advice is appreciated.

Once I get the door open somehow I guess I need to be sure these are the right struts. They seem slightly bigger. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...pt=1404&jsn=13

Figured it out! Thanks anyway. - I used the latch on the door to open the trunk. Once it went up all the way I was able to easily click in the bottom parts of the struts. DONE.

Congrats on figuring it out, and posting the fix.

Why did you replace the struts?
What's the mileage?

My car has 129K miles. I replaced the struts because the other ones rusted out for some reason. They had a bit of rust on them when I bought the car with 40K miles on it. And recently the trunk started violently slamming shut after being opened with the key remote.

The new struts seem to working great. They are a brand called Stabilus.

Now time to tackle the rattling noise the car makes when I start it sometimes. I'll be starting a new thread for that one.

Thanks for those details!

And yea, Stabilus is a well known and respected producer of motion technology and motion control products for automotive, aerospace, commercial tractors, trains, ad nauseum. (no, this is not a commercial 🙂 )

Will watch for future posts ...

I understand you have since been able to install the new struts but the electrical opening height can be adjusted (programmed) so it doesn't open all the way should you have a low garage ceiling height, or something like that. Maybe yours was programmed to not open all the way.

It's a good reminder as I'll be replacing mine. First I'll want to delete the opening limitation I have programmed, then replace the struts and finally program the limitation again.

There are a lot of (scary) threads on start-up rattles, so it'll be a good idea to search this forum (and maybe the W204 forum as well, as the drivetrain and engines are pretty much the same). If your GLK is 2013 or newer (with an M276 engine), it "could get interesting".
