Leaking water pump
Leaking water pump
My 13 Glk water pump has been leaking 6 months . I’ve used maybe 3/4 gallon antifreeze in 2000 miles but now it’s leaking a bit more. Will or can it start to turn into a big leak that can ruin my motor ? I have the pump, but I’m a bit busy - lazy to go through getting a mechanic to do it. I bought a replacement tension pulley, Belt and hoses are maybe 6 months old . Should I replace more of the pulleys or anything else? 85,000 miles .
The only concern for the engine would be damage from possible overheating due to loss of coolant. A bigger concern would be that the bearing in the water pump seizes and the pulley gets broken. This could cause all kinds of damage to the front of the engine. I strongly suggest that you bite the bullet and get it changed asap.
This is a bit like the guys you see driving the cars with half a roll of duct tape holding up one of their windows. Sometimes it's on there long enough to get crusty and really nasty.
In the end, the job to fix it right will be exactly as difficult and expensive after they've driven around with tape all over their car for X months (or even years).
Get it done and stop worrying about it. It's not like you're saving anything by putting it off...

To answer your question, it's unlikely it will suddenly dump enough coolant to cause the engine to overheat, but, over time it will get worse. As long as you stay on top of the leak, and keep topping it off, you should be fine, but, I'd check it every 100 miles or so, top it off, and if it starts to get worse, get it fixed. Right now you're using less than a cup in 100 miles.
