2010 GLK transmission

I’ll keep my ears open for clunks and clicks.
I hate buying tires. They’ll end up costing almost as much as the car 😐.

I cleaned the engine bay today. It had the usual bit of grime buildup around the power steering reservoir cap, but very little other grime. Some rodents got into the air filters, so I replaced those. It vibrates more at idle than I would expect, but with 150K miles, the engine mounts probably need to be replaced. I filled it with fuel and put some miles on it today. I really like the ride. Sportier feeling than my old E320 was. I like the turning radius and the ride height too.
There is a fuel leak that drips under the tank when completely filled, so I suspect the fuel sender gasket is bad. Ive read some posts about other leaky fittings on top of the fuel tank as well. I’ll dig into that tomorrow if I have time.
You might watch my video on the gas sending unit (kind of covers the same failure in the fuel pump, which has a similar "cap"). Watch it though, PZEV (California) cars have different configuration and parts - make doubly certain you get a new part that looks like the old one! Mine was a bad through-connector, but the vast majority are due to a crack in the plastic "cap". I believe your 2010 will have the bolts holding it all together (a lot easier than the "twist-off" fittings on some other GLKs)...

I've been turning wrenches for 60 years. In that time I've changed one valve body. It was way out of my comfort zone, and draining, filling and changing filters is the only other AT service I've ever wanted to do. You have my highest respect!
I'm looking for tires for mine, too. Being a cheap ba$tard, this is what I came up with. Prices are from tire rack:
Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 - 800 A A - 103 V $876.44
Yokohama Avid Ascend GT - 740 A A - 103 V $781.96
Continental Crosscontact LX25 - 740 A A - 99 H $911.96

I’ve dealt with a couple of the twist-off fittings, and they are miserable. BMW seems to really like them. Not sure of the chemistry behind it, but the rings corrode, and somehow corrode and pit the plastic, and they kind of weld themselves together.
Gas leaks make me nervous, and they’re not so great for the environment.
I don’t expect the engine mounts will be easy or fast, but will likely make a world of difference. I changed them on my 328xi a couple of years ago, and I learned a great deal about patience and persistence. At one point I had 5 or 6 3/8” extensions with a nut taped to a socket at the end, and a u-joint in the middle.
The mounts will have to wait for a little bit. I need to prioritize the safety things like gas leaks, washer fluid delivery and tires.
Being that the GLK is based on the same platform as the C-class, are most mechanical parts and repairs the same?
You'll need a "special tool" to get that upper mount bolt off. I made one with a "torque adapter" and a (kind of...) torch.

I’d like to keep it under a grand.

The filter is flexible rubber, and doubles as a seal between the pump and fluid reservoir. I was able to clean the filter and flush out the reservoir. I reinstalled the pump and tested with some water, and it sprayed perfectly. The pump itself is a tiny impeller pump. I pulled the pump out again to make sure the filter was clean, drained the water, and put it all back together. I’m a big fan of anti-seize compound so it went on the lug bolts, points of contact on the back side of the rim, and under-car panel screws. New pump will be going back to Autozone, I’ll spend the $40 on something else.
I also pulled out the back seat to get at the fuel tank. The cap behind the driver’s seat was bone dry, no sign of leaking. The passenger side plastic cap had a pool of fuel on top.
No sign of cracking or breakdown on the cap, so I ordered a new gasket from FCP Euro.
Checking things off the list way faster than expected. This car really is a joy to work on.

great solution! I’ve got a drawer in my toolbox full of customized tools I’ve made over the years. I’ve turned sockets on my lathe to decrease diameter, heated and bent wrenches (like in the video), welded tools together, cut allen keys - all in the name of not paying someone else to fix my car. Pretty satisfying coming up with solutions.

I may speed up the engine mount replacement, the vibrating is annoying.
