I’m completely flabbergasted, stoked, and psyched! I yelled some pretty loud and diverse obscenities when it moved under its own power. Lots of smaller things to look after now. I’ll change the diff fluids, coolant, belt, and whatever other “deferred maintenance” items I come across. The washer fluid motor comes on, but no liquid comes out, rear wiper blade is MIA, interior smells like a Las Vegas call-girl, but it drives!

Your lucky 🍀 it good to hear of simple solutions that don’t break your wallet ! Besides shampooing a cheap O3- ozone machine will likely fix the smell. I use one in abused apartments. I don’t know if you did this or are planning on it but Brake fluid is usually overlooked and by MB maintenance needs to be done about every 40000 miles, ABS , Stability system really need clean fluid to last, and braking will be improved. Was the front driveshaft u joint ok? If you hear clunking when shifting or going from idle to accelerating replace it. They wear and you don’t want that to break. Tire rack has very good tire reviews and a comparison tool.

Brake fluid is on the hot list. Every time Ive done a brake flush, I’ve been amazed at the color/condition of the old fluid. Flex discs and front u-joint all look and feel really good.
I’ll keep my ears open for clunks and clicks.
I hate buying tires. They’ll end up costing almost as much as the car 😐.

I'd start a new thread for tire recommendations.

A top set of tires are maybe 1500, you got a great deal on the Glk .

Thats pretty much what I paid for the car.
I cleaned the engine bay today. It had the usual bit of grime buildup around the power steering reservoir cap, but very little other grime. Some rodents got into the air filters, so I replaced those. It vibrates more at idle than I would expect, but with 150K miles, the engine mounts probably need to be replaced. I filled it with fuel and put some miles on it today. I really like the ride. Sportier feeling than my old E320 was. I like the turning radius and the ride height too.
There is a fuel leak that drips under the tank when completely filled, so I suspect the fuel sender gasket is bad. Ive read some posts about other leaky fittings on top of the fuel tank as well. I’ll dig into that tomorrow if I have time.

Yeah, the motor mounts are almost certainly gone. Sadly, you have a 4Matic, so "it's a process" (took me about 10 hours, and I generally work pretty quick). But it's SO worth it... here's a video of the before and after (for troubleshooting, and for motivation)...

You might watch my video on the gas sending unit (kind of covers the same failure in the fuel pump, which has a similar "cap"). Watch it though, PZEV (California) cars have different configuration and parts - make doubly certain you get a new part that looks like the old one! Mine was a bad through-connector, but the vast majority are due to a crack in the plastic "cap". I believe your 2010 will have the bolts holding it all together (a lot easier than the "twist-off" fittings on some other GLKs)...

That's freekin' awesome!

I've been turning wrenches for 60 years. In that time I've changed one valve body. It was way out of my comfort zone, and draining, filling and changing filters is the only other AT service I've ever wanted to do. You have my highest respect!

I'm looking for tires for mine, too. Being a cheap ba$tard, this is what I came up with. Prices are from tire rack:

Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 - 800 A A - 103 V $876.44
Yokohama Avid Ascend GT - 740 A A - 103 V $781.96
Continental Crosscontact LX25 - 740 A A - 99 H $911.96

Super helpful videos, thanks!
I’ve dealt with a couple of the twist-off fittings, and they are miserable. BMW seems to really like them. Not sure of the chemistry behind it, but the rings corrode, and somehow corrode and pit the plastic, and they kind of weld themselves together.
Gas leaks make me nervous, and they’re not so great for the environment.
I don’t expect the engine mounts will be easy or fast, but will likely make a world of difference. I changed them on my 328xi a couple of years ago, and I learned a great deal about patience and persistence. At one point I had 5 or 6 3/8” extensions with a nut taped to a socket at the end, and a u-joint in the middle.
The mounts will have to wait for a little bit. I need to prioritize the safety things like gas leaks, washer fluid delivery and tires.
Being that the GLK is based on the same platform as the C-class, are most mechanical parts and repairs the same?

Yes, the C-class shares a LOT with the X204 platform, which is a good thing (unlike BMW that insists on a host of unique parts for every sub-sub-sub-sub model).

You'll need a "special tool" to get that upper mount bolt off. I made one with a "torque adapter" and a (kind of...) torch.

I’ve had great luck with Pirelli tires on other cars. I have Continental Crosscontact LX25 tires on my Lexus GX, and they are quiet, smooth, and grab well in snow and rain, but not so great on ice.
I’d like to keep it under a grand.

Washer fluid pump and fuel leak

I bought a new washer fluid pump at Autozone on the way back home from a swim meet with my daughter this morning. I wasn’t sure I’d need it, but they had one in stock so I grabbed it. I had to pull the front driver’s side wheel off to get at the pump. The wheel-well cover (whatever it’s called) was a bit of a pain, but I got it off. I put a bucket under the fluid tank and proceeded to pry the pump out. Turned out there was some gummy, orange moldy crud plugging the filter

The filter is flexible rubber, and doubles as a seal between the pump and fluid reservoir. I was able to clean the filter and flush out the reservoir. I reinstalled the pump and tested with some water, and it sprayed perfectly. The pump itself is a tiny impeller pump. I pulled the pump out again to make sure the filter was clean, drained the water, and put it all back together. I’m a big fan of anti-seize compound so it went on the lug bolts, points of contact on the back side of the rim, and under-car panel screws. New pump will be going back to Autozone, I’ll spend the $40 on something else.
I also pulled out the back seat to get at the fuel tank. The cap behind the driver’s seat was bone dry, no sign of leaking. The passenger side plastic cap had a pool of fuel on top.

No sign of cracking or breakdown on the cap, so I ordered a new gasket from FCP Euro.
Checking things off the list way faster than expected. This car really is a joy to work on.

great solution! I’ve got a drawer in my toolbox full of customized tools I’ve made over the years. I’ve turned sockets on my lathe to decrease diameter, heated and bent wrenches (like in the video), welded tools together, cut allen keys - all in the name of not paying someone else to fix my car. Pretty satisfying coming up with solutions.

I think I’m going to start a different thread for other items. Transmission is shifting like magic! Just replaced the fuel tank gasket. The old gasket was hard, and there was some corrosion that was likely interfering with the seal. I have not filled the tank to see if it actually seals.
I may speed up the engine mount replacement, the vibrating is annoying.

I doubt the tranny mount is good. I plan on replacing that at the same time as the engine mounts.

Sounds like a good idea. It is also the easiest to change.
